Abstract:
Nowadays, climate change is one of the biggest problem of mankind. It is already happening and represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats our planet is facing. The industrial sector produces a signicant fraction of the worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Waste heat recovery (WHR) systems could be one way of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions. In this work a waste heat recovery system for the cement plant Hatschek in Gmunden is investigated, especially with CO2-Cycles, in order to improve the efficiency of the whole plant. In the course of a modernization project of the cement plant in Gmunden, the planetary clinker cooler will be replaced by a grate cooler. There are two different types of the new clinker cooler: normal and recirculating. The mid air tap of the grate cooler is one waste heat source which could be used for waste heat recovery, another one is the rotary kiln exhaust gas. Three different types of CO2-Cycles, the supercritical CO2-Brayton-Cycle (sCO2-BC), the transcritical CO2-Brayton-Cycle (tCO2- BC) and the transcritical CO2-Rankine-Cycle (tCO2-RC), were investigated to produce electricity from this two waste heat sources of the rotary kiln. One simulation was done for a combined use of the two wast heat sources, and one simulation was done for the single use of each wast heat source. Furthermore, a possible CO2-Cycle test plant was also investigated. All the simulations were performed with the IPSEpro simulation program. For a combined use of both waste heat sources, the simulation showed that the tCO2-RC has the highest power output of 6425 kW followed by the tCO2-BC with 5341 kW and the sCO2-BC with 4981 kW (recirculating clinker cooler). The simulation also showed that the recirculating clinker cooler has more power output compared to the normal clinker cooler due to the higher volumetric flow rate of the mid air tap. Compared to the results of the simulated processes of Skazedonigg (vgl.[24]), who investigated a Steam-Rankine-Cycle, an Organic-Rankine-Cycle and a Kalina-Cycle for waste heat recovery in the cement plant Hatschek in Gmunden, all the CO2-Cycles achieve more power output. With 4971 kW the Kalina-Cycle has the highest power output of this three investigated power plant types. This is about 1454 kW less than the tCO2-RC. As the results show, these CO2-Cycles are a very promising alternative technology for waste heat recovery.
