Abstract:

According to the Austrian climate protection report 2015 traffic caused a 61% increase of greenhouse gas emission between 1990 and 2013. It is therefore obvious that the objective of the EU climate protection policy cannot be achieved without adopting additional and more effective measures. In the field of traffic the changeover to alternative drive technologies may be an answer to this problem. Electric mobility in combination with renewable energy sources contribute to a significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. On the other hand a high penetration of the market with electric mobility will have a great impact on the national grid; therefore electric vehicles will have to be integrated in an intelligent way into the grid in order to avoid overloading caused by an uncontrolled quantity of simultaneous charging processes. The present study analyses the controlling function of a wallbox which should guarantee an economical use of the electric vehicle as a flexible controllable load, optimize the consumption of electric current produced by a private PV power plant. A controlling device connected with the charging station via User Datagram Protocol regulates the maximum allowed charging current whereas an analogue communication between the electric vehicle and the charging station provides the charging current which is needed. This communication is operated by the Control Pilot Pin of the IEC 62196 charging cable through the so-called pulse duration modulation. Through a HTTP connection the controller can register the state of the feed-in capacity of the PV plant at a specific moment. In this way it is possible to adapt the maximum allowable charging current of the wallbox during the charging of the vehicle to the feed-in capacity of the PV device thus optimizing private consumption. The main interest of this study lies in the practical operation of the charging control: A Graphical User Interface in the computer language Python has been developed for the communication with the user in order to render the application of the software more manageable. This program also allows the record of all relevant data collected during the charging process to be evaluated later. In addition, the charging processes of the wallbox in combination with an electric vehicle and the special characteristics of the charging station have also been studied.
