dc.description.abstract

The wood-glass composite construction combines the architectural desire for a transparent facade with the constructive idea to lead over a part of the active forces into the facade structure. Today`s social need for openness and transparency should be enhanced by our modern constructions by implementing new facade systems together with environmental innovative ideas. The increasing shortage as well as the fast pace of time that came up during the last years require the careful consideration of energy-saving production methods and materials. The hitherto evaluated wood-glass composite construction meets the conditions in terms of the LCA better than constructions made of aluminum or plastic. Research of this promising construction is done in colaboration with the respective companies, as well as Holzforschung Austria, so that adequate products using high quality materials can be brought on the market. In addition, such materials also provide a comfortable and warm atmosphere for the interior space. This work is based on the thermal and structural-physical interest to critically question this construction method, as well as contribute an innovative and economic input to this significant research. This study sets out with a discrepancy between the approved and audited investigations of wood-glass composite construction and a research project for thermal analysis of this construction. The result of this analysis shows the formation of condensate on the inner surface, which has fatal consequences like mold formation. A first approach to this topic is to critically question the construction in regard to thermal issues so that a possible error can be found and corrected. As for further research, an innovative idea is to be introduced, which may allow an optimization of the previous design. This new approach can then be verified by comparing it with previous studies and conventional facade constructions made of steel or aluminum. To sum up, this study concentrates on a possible optimization of wood-glass composite construction, which allows not only modern approaches to energy and thermal issues but also an individual and multifunctional facade construction.
