Evolving configurations. In search of configurational genetic codes of cultural artefacts

Abstract

Der Begriff „Weiterentwickelung” bezieht sich auf die Anwendung von evolutionären Algorithmen, um die architektonischen Probleme zu lösen. Der Begriff „Konfigurationen” bezieht sich auf das Konzept der räumlichen Konfigurationen, das von Bill Hillier entwickelt wurde und bezeichnet Beziehungen, die die anderen Beziehungen im ganzen Komplex berücksichtigen. Das Konzept der räumlichen Konfiguration erlaubt die Anwendung der computerbasierten Methoden, um die architektonischen Probleme umfangreicher zu lösen. Dies führt zu einer objektiveren Definition des Raumes, statt willkürlicher Entscheidungen. Die Kombination der evolutionären Algorithmen und des konfigurativen Modellieren des Raumes ermöglicht dem geschickten Architekt-Scripter, ein fast unerschöpfliches Gebiet von innovativen architektonischen Lösungen zu betreten. Die Verfügbarkeit der ortsbasierten Daten der Einzelpersonen bietet nicht nur ein Mittel, um ein empirisches Feedback des Verhaltensmusters zu generieren, sondern die Gelegenheit die Information über die großen Datensätze als die Gene der Artefakte aufzunehmen. Das Prinzip ist anwendbar für die quantitativen, zusammenhängenden, geometrischen, topologischen sowie für jeden Typ der abrufbaren Information. Dies, wiederum erlaubt mittels ortsbasierten Daten die Evolution der architektonischen/konfiguratorischen Spezies zu beeinflussen. Diese Masterarbeit übernimmt die oben genannten Annahmen und testet sie durch die Anwendung von gründlichen wissenschaftlichen Methoden, wenn notwendig und ergänzt diese, wenn möglich, mit der künstlerischen Intuition, die mit den aktuellen Entwicklungen im Bereich der Neurowissenschaften geführt werden. Die konfiguratorischen Gene sind Informationen über die konfiguratorische Beziehungen zwischen den Elementen des Artefaktes. Um sie aus dem bestehenden Artefakt zu entnehmen, werden die Beziehungen zwischen den Elementen des Systems aufgenommen. Innerhalb des Rahmens dieser Masterarbeit, erfolgt die Entnahme im ersten Schritt durch Diskretisierung des Systems und im zweiten Schritt durch das Modellieren der Beziehungen zwischen den Systemelementen. Diese Masterarbeit ist eine Kombination aus Essays und einem praktischen Teil. Der Essay-Teil des Projektes ist selbst verfasste Artikel, die sich auf das Thema beziehen und zusammengestellt ein Ganzes ergeben. Die theoretischen Prämissen sind durch die Schaffung der Prototypen getestet - ausgewählt aus dem Lösungsspektrum. Wiener Märkte und Spielplätze sind als konfiguratorischer Kontext der prototypischen Erkundungen ausgesucht.

"Evolving” refers to the application of evolutionary algorithms in solving of architectural problems. “Configurations” refers to the concept of spatial configuration developed by Bill Hillier, meaning relations, which take account of other relations in a complex. The concept of spatial configuration allows us to apply computational methods to architectural problem solving more extensively. This leads to a more objective definition of space and less arbitrary decision-making. The combination of evolutionary algorithms and configurational modeling of space in the hands of a skillful architect and scripter/programmer opens up a virtually limitless space of exciting and innovative architectural solutions. The availability of location-based-data of individuals offers not only a means of getting empirical behavioral feedback but also offers the opportunity to incorporate the information retrieved from large data sets into configurational genes of artifacts. This principle applies whether it is quantitative, relational, geometrical, topological or any other type of retrievable information. This, in turn, allows location-based-data to influence the evolution of architectural/configurational species. This thesis takes the above assumptions and tests them by applying the rigor of scientific method, where necessary, and augments it with artistic intuition guided with the most recent findings in the field of neuroscience, where possible. Traditionally site is the place where an architectural artefact is to be constructed or where it already exists. Configurationally it is to be understood as a set of relations between elements of the considered system/subsystem. Relations between existing elements as well as possible future relations between elements that are about to be added to the system. In the computational context it seems more adequate to use the plural ‘sites and consider multiple sites at a time. In the language of a machine, the site for an algorithm is a set of all possible sites that meet certain conditions. Selection of sites is based on their ranking. There exists nearly infinite amount of possible existing and virtual sites. Configurational genes are information about configurational relations between elements of an artefact. To extract them from existing artefacts is to record the relations between elements of the system. Within the framework proposed by this thesis it is done by first discretizing the system and then modelling the relations between elements of the system. This thesis is a mix of research and practical work. Theoretical side of the undertaking is explored in short essays/articles on themes related to the topic of the thesis and then assembled together to form a whole. Theoretical assumptions were then tested by producing a collection of prototypes selected from the field of possible solutions. Viennese market squares and playgrounds have been selected for the configurational context of the prototypical explorations.
