Abstract:

This thesis aims to investigate explosion hazards in the stripping process of a production plant of polymer dispersions. During this process the remaining monomers (butadiene and styrene) are removed by water vapour from the dispersion. The addition of ambient air in some process steps can form an explosive atmosphere. The off gas passes a condenser and is finally burned. For a risk assessment the process was examined from the stripper to the combustion chamber. A short literature study on explosion protection was followed by measurements in the process and the results were evaluated. An accurate detection of the hydrocarbons proved to be too time-consuming and not necessary, because it is known, that the concentration of the hydrocarbons exceeds the lower explosion limit. Therefore the oxygen concentrations in the process were measured via amperometric and optical probes. The aggressive process conditions made measurements lasting more than one week impossible with the equipment utilised. Nevertheless, areas with oxygen concentrations sufficient to create an explosive atmosphere could be identified. Due to the fact that the process is free of ignition sources, there is no danger of explosion. In the case of leaks the formation of an explosive atmosphere in the first process section with low pressure inside the containers is possible. In the area after the vacuum pump an explosive atmosphere might be formed outside the containers. The oxygen input in the process can be reduced by using process steam instead of ambient air. Thereby the oxygen concentration decreases and the formation of an explosive atmosphere becomes less likely.
