The last years have shown a change in the energy supply system due to the energy transition. The energy transition is defined as the transition from a fossil-nuclear energy supply to a sustainable energy supply with renewable energy. It raises the question of how the European energy system needs to be adapted in order to integrate a high proportion of irregular available, renewable energy. To answer this fundamental question, the EEG - Energy Economics Group of the University of Technology in Vienna has started a project in 2008 in which a so-called HiREPS model (High Resolution Power System Model) is created.
By using this model it is possible to simulate different scenarios in the European energy supply system.
In this thesis, an extension for this HiREPS model in the field of hydro power is developed. It is about the modeling of the flow times of rivers that have not been taken into account so far.
The reason for developing this model is to consider the impact of the energy production from river power plants by storage power plants.
Without a proper consideration of the flow times the run of a storage power plant for example in Tirol would cause a generation of electricity in all Inn and Danube power plants without any delay. However, in reality occur delays of several hours between the power generation of the storage plant in Tirol and the resulting additional power generation in the Danube power plants. Since this additional power generation can be up to 30% of the generated power of storage power station, this temporal effect is very important.
For the mathematical description of the flow process, the empirical formula of Manning-Strickler is used. A transformation of the formula is performed to require only easily identifiable parameters or input data of the HiREPS model. For the determination of the parameter, which describes the surface condition (roughness) of a riverbed, a method has been developed, based on the analysis of the time difference of flow values. For rivers that are free or only slightly influenced by hydraulic structures the results, based on Austrian rivers, have shown that the modeling of the flow time is in good agreement with the real flow process. For the consideration of hydraulic structures, which greatly influence the flow behavior, it requires a further development of the model.
