dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
In terms of medicine, a paradigm shift is taking place towards the use of synthetic implants. These so-called scaffolds are porous, biodegradable and work as a carrier for integrated biological cells or molecules. Enhanced tissue regeneration is promoted by a balance of temporary mechanical support and adequate vascularization. At the end of the therapy the scaffold material should undergo complete substitution by the body's own tissues. This novel tissue engineering approach requires scaffolds with defined porous architecture and predictable physical properties. On this field generative manufacturing is able to serve those needs. Rapid Prototyping was the forerunner of generative manufacturing procedures. It developed from creating physical prototypes to the manufacturing of whole functional components. Generative manufacturing is now used for the shaping of geometrically demanding ceramic materials in a small batch series. At the Vienna University of Technology a novel "`Blueprinter"' series was developed specifically for this purpose. The flexibility of the system and the achieved product properties legitimize the use over conventional methods.
The objective of this work is the flawless production of tricalcium phosphate scaffolds using generative manufacturing. The first part of this work deals with the ideal composition of the TCP powder and photosensitive resin. The interaction among the components and their impact on the final product will be examined and the process parameters for the process chain are filtered out. Furthermore, the achieved product will be characterized in terms of mechanical properties.
