Im Wandel der Zeit - Erweiterungsbau der Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek

Abstract

Thema dieser Diplomarbeit ist ein Erweiterungsbau der Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek in Bregenz. Sie besteht aus einem theoretischen Teil, in dem unter anderem die Geschichte der Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek sowie auch Techniken des Bibliotheksbaus behandelt wurden, als auch eine Entwurfsaufgabe. Letzteres sollte ein Anbau an das bereits bestehende und denkmalgeschützte Gebäude darstellen. Die große Herausforderung der Entwurfsaufgabe war es, ein harmonisches Zusammenspiel von Alt und Neu zu schaffen und den umgrenzenden Park mit der unregelmäßig an- und absteigenden Topographie zu berücksichtigen und in den Entwurf einzubinden.<br />Die Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek ist an einem sehr dominanten und speziellen Platz in Bregenz, der sich für den Ort und ganz Vorarlberg auf einem kultur- und religionsgeschichtlich bedeutsamen Areal befindet.<br />Bis in die Zeit der Römer und des Keltischen Brigantions ist die kulturelle Nutzung an diesem Ort nachweisbar. Die Bibliothek liegt auf dem westlichen Ausläufer des Gebhardsberges und scheint durch ihre erhöhte Position über Bregenz zu wachen. Sie besteht aus fünf Baukörpern, die sich sowohl stilistisch als auch baugeschichtlich voneinander unterscheiden und im Verlauf von sechs Jahrhunderten entstanden sind. Im Süden befindet sich das Schlösschen Babenwohl, danach die transparente Eingangshalle, darauf folgen der Mitteltrakt (Konventbau), der Verbindungstrakt und schließlich die Abteikirche.<br />In den vergangenen Jahren ist der Medienbestand der Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek in einem solchen Umfang gewachsen, dass der Gebäudekomplex zu klein geworden ist. Nicht nur mehr Raum für Bücher und andere Medien, sondern auch Raum für Ausstellungen, Konzerte und Seminare ist dringend erwünscht. Zusammen mit Herrn Magister Thomas Feurstein, dem Abteilungsleiter für die Landeskunde in der Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek, habe ich ein Raumprogramm zusammengestellt, das auf die Wünsche und Bedürfnisse der Besucher sowie auch der Mitarbeiter der Bibliothek eingeht.<br />Bibliotheken in der heutigen Zeit sind nicht nur Orte des Wissens und Forschens, sondern bieten auch Raum für Kommunikation und Unterhaltung.<br />Die Tendenz geht eindeutig in diese Richtung. Somit befindet sich die Bibliothek also im Wandel und muss sich den aktuellen Bedürfnissen der Besucher anpassen. Gerade in diesem Bereich der zusätzlichen Funktionen einer Bibliothek gibt es in der Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek einen erheblichen Nachholbedarf. Das Raumprogramm des Anbaus wurde so gestaltet, dass es diesen Anforderungen entspricht und die Funktion der Bibliothek als modernes und offenes Kommunikationszentrum verstärkt.<br />

The topic of this diploma thesis is an extension to the Vorarlberg Regional/State Library in Bregenz. It consists of a theoretical part which among other things deals with the history of the Vorarlberg Library and the techniques of library building as well as of the layout assignment. The latter was supposed to be an extension to the already existing and landmarked building. However, the big challenge of the assignment was to create a harmonious interplay of old and new and to consider and integrate the surrounding park with its irregular up-and-down topography.<br />The Vorarlberg State Library is situated on a very dominant and particular site in Bregenz that is located in an area that is very significant both culturally and historically for the town and the whole region of Vorarlberg. The cultural utilization of this area can be tracked back to the Roman era and the Celtic Brigantion. The library sits on the western branch vein of the 'Gebhardsberg' and seems to watch over Bregenz due to its elevated position. It consists of five building blocks that differentiate both in style and building history and that were created in the course of six centuries. In the south there is the Castle Babenwohl, then the transparent entrance hall followed by the central section (convent building), the connecting part and finally the abbey church. In the past years the media stock of the Vorarlberg State Library has grown to such an extent, that the building has become too small. There is an urgent wish for not only more space for books and other media but also room for expositions , concerts and seminars. Together with Mr.<br />Feurstein M.A., head of the department for Regional Studies of the Voralrberg Stat Library I have assembled a space allocation program that takes into consideration the requests and needs of the visitors as well as those of the staff. Today's libraries are not only places of knowledge and studies but also of communication and entertainment . The tendency is without doubt pointing into this direction. Insofar the library is in a state of change and has to adapt to the current needs of its customers. It is exactly in this area of additional functions that there is some considerable catching up to do for the State Library in Vorarlberg. I have created the space program of the extension in such a way that it meets these demands and reinforces at the same time the function of the library as a modern and open center of communication.
