Nagy, P. (2013).
Gäßler (1987) executed field tests on soil nail constructions, in order to investigate the structural behaviour and failure mechanism of soil nail constructions. He also developed an analytical design method for soil nail constructions based on the field tests.
The objective of the present diploma thesis was to find the best model for the soil nails in FLAC3D by the simulation of the field tests by Gäßler (1987). Six numerical models were set up for this purpose. The results of the numerical models were compared with the results of the field tests. Different material models were used for the reinforced ground and different structural elements for the nails and the shotcrete lining in the six models, in order to find the best way of simulating the field tests.
In the present diploma thesis the problem of the conventional analytical design methods of soil nail constructions is discussed. For example the upper nail forces gained by means of Gäßler's (1987) analytical method are much lower than the forces in the field tests and in the numerical models.
Summing up the studies showed that FLAC3D is suitable to model soil nail constructions. Thereby in soils with low cohesion the softening of the soil has to be considered, the soil nails have to be simulated using cable structural elements and the shotcrete lining has to be simulated using shell structural elements. The program presents especially good results under service loads, it can therefore be applied for a serviceability state design. The failure state of the soil nail construction can be identified as relatively close to the field tests.
