Ottowitz, B. (2013). Twin Towers at Wolf Point, Chicago : structure as a key design element [Master Thesis, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://resolver.obvsg.at/urn:nbn:at:at-ubtuw:1-58703
The higher a building gets the more forces act on it and thus the structure is gaining more importance. The differences and similarities of buildings and their use of structure as a key design element on the façade are shown by examples from the 1950s until today.
Under these circumstances the visual perception plays a major part. The first part of the thesis deals with the history of skyscrapers and the analysis of selected examples of high-rise buildings in New York City and Chicago, where the structure is a key design element. Based on this research the second part of the thesis is the design of the Twin Towers in Chicago, with the design element structure on the façade. The skyscrapers are designed as multipurpose Twin Towers, like a city within a city.
