This thesis examines the potential of multimodal user interfaces for computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) systems. Multimodal user interfaces leverage visual, haptic and sound based channels either for data input or output. The Interest in this field lies in the rich functionality and advanced user interaction which can be introduced in the development of future CAAD systems.<br />A survey of the technologies and existing applications that use multimodal user interfaces was made. Design tasks such as; the creation of a wall, the placement of a window on a wall element and the change of position the window, were considered as requirements for the definition of a multimodal user interface. Based on the analysis of requirements a design task network is proposed in a diagrammatic way. In addition suitable input and output channels have been defined as the means of communication between users and CAAD systems. The design task network can be used to implement and evaluate the performance of future multimodal CAAD systems.<br />The thesis concludes with a discussion of the challenges of multimodal user interaction for CAAD and describes an agenda for future research in this area.<br />
