Abstract:
Extensive fluctuations in demand will be perceived as turbulent, if production isn't sufficiently flexible. In the business domain of mechanical engineering small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are more likely to be subject to dealing with heavy fluctuations than large enterprises. To cope with this situation, Morawetz designed a model for cost optimized adjustment of production capacity thru a decision support system (DSS). During development of this model, within a pre project of an FFG project, three questions were raised, which will be answered by this thesis.
* How should an IT-System be designed to support a decision-maker in developing a cost-efficient capacity plan? * How do capacity options influence each other during implementation? * What kind of impact on capacity supply and costs does the usage of capacity options cause? To show that there is a system design that fits the needs of a DSS for capacity adjustment, a software prototype, called "Flexation-DSS", is built. During development two concepts are introduced. One concept describes a way how to adjust a capacity plan manually. This way is used instead of the one recommended by Morawetz, where a cost-efficient capacity plan is achieved thru an optimization algorithm. An instruction guides a user thru five question-blocks and corresponding possible actions. The prototype supports the decision maker in answering the questions. A second concept is introduced for the graphical part of creating a capacity plan within the Flexation-DSS . It describes elements and methods a user will work with on a capacity plan. The concept is based on capacity envelope curves, bar charts, known from spreadsheet programs, and the "Drag&Drop" concept, describing how to move elements manually.
Focus of this thesis are flexibility options, which are influencing each other in different ways and to different extent. The concept of influenced options matrix (iom) is a tool to visualize reciprocal influence of options. In the subsequent steps this information is transferred to option attributes. Therefore different variations of the basic parameters are necessary, containing the accordant value of the connection expressed between different options. Thereby you define the impact of combining different options on a lower scale, and so you can also extrapolate the effects on a larger scale.
Flexation-DSS is an supplementary software program for other DSS / ERP Systems and so has to interact with other programs to fetch necessary data. Thereby two considerations have to be taken into account. One has to deal with the way information is exchanged and the other with data structure. Within the scope of the thesis a way is described, how data are transferred between two DSS by using csv formatted files (comma-separated values). The structure of the data closely follows the structure of option parameters introduced by Morawetz. To show this interaction an existing DSS prototype, called Spreadsheet-DSS, is upgraded with import and export functions to communicate with Flexation-DSS. To get an estimation of the degree Flexation-DSS improves the generation of a capacity plan, two actions were taken. Within the first, a comparison of Flexation-DSS and Spreadsheet-DSS were made, within the second, an expert was interviewed. The conclusions were that on the one hand Flexation-DSS isn't ready yet for operational use, but on the other hand the software is a step in the right direction and able to help reducing the amount of failures a user can make during plan generation.
