Abstract:

The Atlantic Ocean has a strong impact on the Portuguese country. Historical as well as present developments are often influenced by the situation close to the coast. This living environment is affected due to the changing of the coastal structure caused by coastal erosion. Nowadays the erosion is enhanced by the climate change and leads to be a problem for the inhabitants as well as for tourists. The project 'OFFSHORE' focuses on the changing structure of the Atlantic Coast. The planning includes a building for reseachers and for visitors. It is a place to work and to communicate as well as for visitors to learn and to explore the topic. The site is located at the coast, near the town Ericeira, about 45 km north of the capital Lisbon. The building exposes itself to the power of the sea and place itself in the water, in front of the eroding coast. Thus it let the coast nearly untouched. Turbines in the building exploit the energy of the waves for electricity. The building exists of working space, laboratories as well as an auditorium and seminar rooms for the researchers as well as space for the visitors. They pass through the building along a walkway until underwater level, passing by exhibition space and situations for observation . On top of the building there is a public café and different lookout platforms.
