The underlying thesis was initiated by the competition for the redesign of the High Line in Manhattan, New York City. In the course of my research I focused on Chelsea, a neighbourhood, which reinvented itself in the past 14 years. Its inhabitants suffered in many ways the same fate as those in SOHO in the 80s. The development to a hip bohemian district caused property speculation and soaring rents. The result was an exodus towards Brooklyn. Vacant industrial buildings that were cultural hotspots, evaded apartments within the uppermost price category. Therefore it is even more astonishing that a whole block which is located on the Hudson River not far from the Chelsea Piers has been serving as car park for more than 15 years. This fact inspired me in my conceptual design. On the one hand, it intends to bridge the vacant side with a building structure which enables residents and visitors of the High Line Park direct access to the Hudson River. On the other hand, the design aims to be focal point for those interested in art. The art_base - a creative cluster on a smaller scale.
