Ellinger, C. (2007).
As a part of a quality management system it is essential for each laboratory to look into the issue of uncertainty of measurement.
The many results of a measurement are compared with material parameters and, as a result of this comparison, enable the laboratory to make a decision on the next application. In such cases it is important to know the quality of the results. Procedures for the determination of the uncertainty of measurements are helpful to get the necessary information. The first part of this master's thesis deals with methods to establish the uncertainty of measurement for the measurement process. The first method is based on a mathe-matical model of the measurement procedure in which every input quantity is calcu-lated with an uncertainty contribution. The entirety of this uncertainty contribution equals the overall uncertainty. The other two methods are empirical methods which al-low you to calculate an overall uncertainty of the measurement process.
In the second part of this master's thesis the above methods are put into practice in a number of experiments. These experiments have been carried out in the Christian Doppler Laboratory for performance-based optimization of flexible road pavements" (ISTU, Vienna University of Technology). The measurement process "Nadelpenetration" and "Dynamic Shear Rheometer" have been analysed using data from interlaboratory tests. The influence of restraint moment set during the calibration process on the quality of measurement results has been investigated in the measurement process of the "4-point-bending-beam" The gross density was defined for a mixture, and any influ-ences on the measurement results caused by the laboratory technicians have been in-vestigated.
The measurement process of the "bending beam rheometer" has been in-vestigated in terms of the influence of individual batches on the measurement results.
In order to ensure quality assurance it is important for a laboratory to use a method to define the measurement uncertainty for a measurement process. For this purpose a process instruction is composed to define measurement uncertainty at the ISTU-Laboratory.
