Abstract:
At the Institute of Chemical Engineering of the Vienna University of Technology two fully continuous small-scale FCC pilot facilities with an internal circulating fluidized bed design are available. A plant, henceforth referred to as plant A, was developed in the mid-1990s by Hofbauer and Reichhold and it has been used at numerous experiments ever since. It is not possible to exceed a feedrate of 3kg/h at a satisfactory level. Therefore an additional plant, henceforth referred to as plant B, with a higher capacity of the regenerator was developed by Bielansky and Weinert in the year 2010. The aim of this work is to examine the full operability of plant B for future experiments.
Within the scope of this thesis experiments were conducted to measure the influences of plant parameters like riser superficial velocity, bottom-fluidization, feed inlet tube length and cross-sectional area of the riser tube on the circulation rate quantitatively. In addition experiments to evaluate the gas distribution in the plant at the entire operating range were carried out. After the successful completion of these testings (riser-fluidization with air) feed experiments with an equilibrium-catalyst of the company Grace and VGO as a typical feedstock were performed. The influence of regenerator-fluidization and siphon-fluidization on the coke amount in the product was observed. The product composition obtained by the experiments were compared to plant A. Samples of the loaded and the regenerated catalyst of both plants were withdrawn and underwent a thermogravimetric analysis. Experiments which show the influence on the product composition by variation of the mean riser temperature and the c/o-ratio (catalyst/oil-ratio) were performed.
The operability of the plant was demonstrated. It could be shown that there is a tendency to lower conversion grades and higher coke ammounts at plant B in comparison to plant A. A crucial problem constitutes the entrance of the catalyst into the riser.
