Abstract:

This thesis deals with the virtual reconstruction of the synagogue in Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad). Built after the plans of the German architect Adolf Wolff the synagogue was completed in 1877 and destroyed in 1938 by National Socialists. Due to a lack of building plans the virtual reconstruction is based on contemporary photographs and descriptions. The three-dimensional model was generated by using the CAD/BIM-software ArchiCAD; the renderings and illustrations were created by deploying the software Artlantis. Selected constructional elements were realized by using ArchiCADs scripting language GDL (Geometric Description Language); the pros and cons of these parametrical objects are discussed in the theoretical section of the thesis. The chapter dealing with aspects of art-history traces the development of the construction of synagogues in 19. Century Central Europe. It puts a focus on the search for the synagogues “adequate style”. For the synagogue in Karlsbad the Moorish Revival style, the Romanesque style and the Rundbogenstil (Round-arch style) became significant. Hence, the thesis puts an emphasis on these architectural styles. The applied part of the thesis comprises the documentation of the rendering process as well as the presentation of the results.
