Schneemayer, A. (2010).
Since concrete can only handle compressive load it is necessary to reinforce concrete to increase its tensile strength. During the last years more and more fiber reinforced concrete is used to do so. The fibers are mixed in the liquid concrete which then can carry the stress after cracking but also the early thermal shrinkage which occurs as the concrete cures.
There are many different applications in the environmental technology, e.g. noise prevention elements, construction elements for roofs and walls and in the civil engineering on public thoroughfares for the rise of the durability and use serviceability.
In concrete constructions purely uniaxial load states appear only seldom. In the construction practise mostly biaxial or multiaxial stresses occur to a damage. For the construction of a building it is therefore important for the engineer to know the exact values of the actual mechanical and fracture-mechanical properties of the material.
This makes the necessity of expressive measuring methods and test facilities that can stress the specimen under conditions that are close to reality clear. Within the scope of this masters thesis four different fiber types (two plastic fibers and two steel fibers) have been tested with uniaxial and biaxial test method (Wedge Splitting Test according to Tschegg) for cubic specimen as well as the beam test methods "TC RILEM 162-TDF" or "ÖNORM EN 14651" and the "Richtlinie Faserbeton - Ausgabe März 2002". Additionally reference specimen of plane concrete without fibers have been tested.
The advantages of the wedge splitting methode compared to the "TC RILEM 162-TDF" or "ÖNORM EN 14651" and the "Richtlinie Faserbeton - Ausgabe März 2002" are that the test specimen have only about one fifths of the volume and mass of the beams. This allows material-saving testing which can be explained with an easy spindle test machine. To provide the biaxial load two hydraulic pressure devices are used. They work with defined, homogeneous and constant pressure for the whole test duration.
The fracture behaviour was recorded with different pressure loads by acoustic emissions measurement and animated graphically, by a specially developed program, in relation to the strength-CMOD(crack mouth opening displacement)-diagram. In this way it is possible to compare directly the crack propagation with the actual damage propagation. This provides more precise information about the size and the course of the process zone to get more knowledge of fiber reinforced concrete under biaxial load.
