Abstract:
These days manufactures producing goods of many different areas face the same problems. They have to react on an always changing market very fast to stay competitive. This fact is in contradiction to the complexity of distributed systems that can be found in modern systems intended for industrial automation. There is no question that the distributed approach for industrial automation is on the rise but at the same time the software development methods for these systems cannot keep pace with this progress. IEC61499 is an emerging standard designated to help to get these problems under control. The ``Fordiac Runtime Environment'' (FORTE) is an open source implementation of the IEC61499 standard which runs on a PC as well as on small embedded systems. One platform supported by FORTE is the Lego Mindstroms NXT brick. It features an ARM processor and the FORTE currently allows to create local applications based on IEC61499. In this thesis the communication interfaces offered by the NXT will be analyzed and the FORTE will be enhanced to allow multiple NXT bricks to communicate with each other.
The NXT brick offers the possibility to communicate via the Bluetooth wireless technology and a cable based RS485 interface. The final solution represents a hybrid variant of the wireless and the cable based approach. Devices are able to form and maintain a backbone network based on the token bus (IEEE 802.4) protocol. Furthermore there is the possibility for devices that are not physically connected to the token ring to join communication via Bluetooth.
The resulting software ensures the maintenance of the network infrastructure but stays completely transparent to the IEC61499 developer. It is possible to model a function block network without knowledge about the communication mechanisms. The big advantage is that distributed systems can be built quickly without having to deal with the underlying hardware. This system can be used for educational purposes to introduce students to the IEC61499 and hence helps to establish the standard.
