e-Learning, a new medium which is nowadays already used in many cases, has become vital particularly in professional further education, due to the constantly growing importance of knowledge. For the educational sector this means new challenges in the teaching and learning process as well as in information preparation and transferring.
The following thesis explores the topic of e-Learning in university teachings and deals primarily with learning management systems, briefly called learning platforms.
After a basic introduction to the term, the paper analyzes e-Learning as a special form of learning platforms and describes their characteristics, criteria and requirements in detail. In the course of this, the development of this new technology at university is pictured, an overview of the current situation in Austria is given and some learning management systems at universities in Vienna are introduced.
The final focus is then on the use of a learning platform at a university investigated on the basis of a selected project in which the question whether and to what extent e-Learning should be employed is to be answered. For these purposes it is attempted to describe the e-Learning system "Learn@WU" of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (WU) as an example of an already successfully used learning platform and to analyze it with the help of the concepts and basics presented in the context of this thesis. By means of different qualitative and quantitative methods like self-conducted interviews and already existing statistics, empiric reports and user surveys the use, acceptance and satisfaction of the main users of this technology, the WU students, are to be shown and proved. In further consequence it is to be clarified to what extent the use of the system or rather the learning contents and resources offered on Learn@WU affect students' learning success.
