Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht darin, die wichtigsten in der mathematischen Ökologie auftretenden Einpopulationsmodelle und ihren mathematischen Hintergrund näher zu beleuchten. Die einzelnen Kapitel behandeln verschiedene Modelle und beschreiben die zum Verständnis benötigten mathematischen Kenntnisse und Methoden. Bei den Modellen handelt es sich sowohl um zeitlich diskrete als auch um zeitlich kontinuierliche und sowohl um deterministische als auch um stochastische Modelle, wobei eine Einteilung nach diesen Eigenschaften getroffen wird.<br />Nach der Einleitung werden grundlegende deterministische Modelle, wie das diskrete Exponentialmodell, das Malthus-Modell und das kontinuierliche Exponentialmodell vorgestellt. Im dritten Kapitel wird eine Verfeinerung des diskreten Exponentialmodells betrachtet, welche zum logistischen Wachstum führt. Anschließend erfolgt im vierten Kapitel eine nähere Untersuchung des stetigen Analogon des logistischen Wachstums, woraus die Verhulstsche Differentialgleichung resultiert. In Kapitel 5 wird das Lesliemodell vorgestellt. Bei diesem zeitlich diskreten Modell wird die betrachtete Population in verschiedene Altersklassen eingeteilt, wodurch individuelle Geburten- und Sterberaten für die einzelnen Klassen möglich werden.<br />Im Unterschied zu den vorangegangenen Modellen werden in Kapitel 6 und 7 die Wachstumsraten als stochastische Größen angenommen, wobei erst ein einfaches Modell vorgestellt und untersucht wird und anschließend die Populationsentwicklung als stochastischer Prozess modelliert wird. Dafür werden zu Anfang der Geburten- und der Todesprozess getrennt betrachtet und anschließend zusammengeführt.<br />Um eine Brücke zur Anwendung zu schlagen werden in Kapitel 8 einige Methoden zur Schätzung von Populationsgrößen vorgestellt, wobei näher auf Capture-Recapture-Methoden eingegangen wird.
