Timber construction has been gaining in importance for some time. In order to be able to use wood flexibly as a building material for different constructions, continuous further development of wood products is necessary. Prefabricated structures in particular make it possible to erect buildings ranging from single-family houses to multi-storey residential and office buildings in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner. Opening up this market area for timber construction is an important step towards establishing wood as a common building material in these fields. The company „Egger Holzwerkstoffe“ plans to enter these fields with an innovative product for a„system wall“. This is a planked lightweight prefabricated wall, which ideally makes optimum use of the raw material wood, thanks to a delicate framework structure on the inside. This structure leads to a homogeneous effective wall stiffness and is intended to increase the flexibility of the system. In this work, some fundamental questions for the development process are dealt with. First, the load-bearing capacity of the product is examined under various load scenarios (vertical and horizontal loads). On one hand, this is done through the extensive evaluation and interpretation of a test specimen that was pushed to failure by vertical loading in the wall plane. This provided insight into the basic support mechanism of the wall and critical construction details could be identified. Due to the complex mechanical behavior of wood, such analyses are essential for the product development process. On the other hand, detailed modeling was carried out with the finite element program Abaqus. Using these simulations, critical stress zones were identified and the flow of forces through the wall structure was analyzed. This enabled an estimation in contribution of the different wall elements to the effective wall stiffness and load-bearing capacity to be made. Subsequently, some construction variants (such as unequal planking or the failure ofone panel due to fire) as well as the effect of non-centric load application were examined using finite element simulations. The results of these simulations will subsequently be used to define new test programs. In the second part of the work, a Python script was developed, which makes it possible to automatically generate and evaluate different wall models in Abaqus. With this, 200 wall models were simulated and the effects of different system parameters on load-bearing capacity and rigidity were examined. Material properties, cross-sections, grid dimensions, geometries and the main material directions of the paneling were varied. The influences of these parameters on stress and deformation states are extensively documented. Based on this, a proposal for an optimal configuration of the system wall was made.
