"Wind naturally is an old way to produce energy. In the 7th century there have been built the first wind mills in the Persian Region and at the end of the 18th century the first electricity was produced out of a windmill. After a first phase of the wind boom the windmills got pushed out of the short-term resource oil. Because of reaching peak-oil, the continuing energy crisis, the energy-dependency of few states and the rising energy prices, got the forward-looking states to count on renewable energy, especially wind energy, which got expressed through different aims in different levels in politics. In Austria the development of wind energy continuous quiet rapidly, like in Europe, North America or Asia. The limitations caused through topography or population structure are huge in Austria and therefore the development potential is relatively low. Nevertheless, the electricity production out of wind energy will be an essential part in the Austrian electricity sector. The task is to get a well-founded statement about the realistic electricity production out of wind energy in Austria. As a basic tool, we use the 2011 developed tool, the "Windatlas", to generate the theoretical mobilisable wind energy potential. Therefore different technical and economical criteria's will be worked out in workshops of experts. The main focus will be the working phase from the theoretical to the realistic potential. Therefore a four phase's process will run through to get a broad opinion of experts, like employees from the government, mayors, planners, ornithologists and wind energy operators. As the result we will get the realistic wind energy potential of Austria, which will contribute a high share of the electricity production. Mainly in the East of Austria, but also in the North and on the tops of the hills and the mountains are quiet good wind sites available."
