Torghele, H. (2007).
At the beginning of the fifties, the use of prestressed concrete for bridge constructions increased rapidly. Many of these buildings, which are still in use, have already reached their lifetime. Therefore, the question arises whether sufficient load-carrying-capacities and serviceabilities (according to the state of the art) can still be ensured or not.
In the course of the demolition of the railroad station bridge in Werfen, which was put into operation in 1952, the Institute for Structural Engineering at TU Vienna got the possibility to conduct tests concerning the shear load bearing capacity. The bridge construction was designed as a continuous beam spanned over two fields with a respective supporting distance of 31.30 m.
Within this thesis three test setups were developed, allowing to get information about the shear load bearing capacity of two separated tee beams. The beams were removed during the demolition work of the bridge.
Both beams were 14 m long with a plate width of 1.05 m. The test setup, consisting of the two tee beams together with steel girders and a special preload system, was designed as a closed force system without an extra test frame.
After the removal of the two tee beams the reinforcement was located with non destructive test methods (profometry). The mechanical properties of the used building-materials (concrete, reinforcement, and prestressed reinforcement) were determined from material samples tested in the laboratory.
During the load tests strain as well as deformation measurements were conducted, and the development of crack initiation in the beams was recorded continuously. The thesis contains basics of the shear force theory, the test planning and execution as well as its evaluation, the previous calculated finite element simulation of the test procedures, and the calculation of the safest load of the bridge structure according to various standards.
