Comparison and optimization of analytical equipment (pilot) for possible use in the analytics of hydrocarbon content in oilfield waters : comparison of analytical results with existing procedures based on IR (DIN38409-H18) and GC (ISO9377-2 - H53)

Abstract

Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit drei Teilgebieten. Der erste Teil besteht aus dem Vergleich der drei untersuchten Analysenmethoden mit Hilfe künstlich hergestellter Proben, welche durch den Industriepartner zur Verfügung gestellt wurden: Die bekannte DIN38409-H18 welche eine IR- Messung bei ca. 3.000cm-1 in Freon-113 als Lösungsmittel benutzt, der Nachfolgestandard ISO9377-2 der eine GC-FID mit Hexan als Lösungsmittel verwendet und schließlich der von QuantaRed Technologies in Kooperation mit der TU Wien entwickelte Prototyp (Eracheck®) der einen Quantenkaskadenlaser (QCL) als Lichtquelle im mittleren IR bei ca. 1.370-1.380cm-1 in Kombination mit einem zyklischen Aliphaten (z.B. Zyklohexan) als Lösungsmittel verwendet.<br />Im zweiten Teil wurde der Einfluss der Probenvorbereitung auf alle drei Methoden untersucht, um eine Probenvorbereitung für den Eracheck® vorzuschlagen, die einerseits die notwendige Präzision der Ergebnisse garantiert und andererseits die Probenvorbereitung so einfach wie möglich gestaltet.<br />Zum Schluss wurden die Proben von der Wasseraufbereitungsanlage in Schönkirchen mit Hilfe des etablierten DIN Standards und des Eracheck® untersucht.<br />Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass die für den Eracheck verwendete Methode einen linearen Bereich von 0,5 - 1.000 ppm mit einer Wiederholpräzision zwischen 0,2 und 0,5 ppm (in Abhängigkeit des Messbereichs) für Rohöl in Wasser aufweist, und das die Resultate mit den beiden Normmethoden vergleichbar sind, wenn die Kalibration mit dem gesuchten Öl erfolgt.<br />Dieser Bereich ist um ca. einen Faktor 10 größer als für die anderen verfügbaren Methoden.<br />Die Verwendung der vorgeschlagenen Referenzmaterialien an Stelle des gesuchten Rohöls für die Kalibration reduzierte die Wiederfindungsrate für beide Standardmethoden verglichen zu den Messungen mit einem bekannten Rohöl. Demgegenüber blieb die Wiederfindung für den Eracheck in einem akzeptablen Bereich während sie zum Beispiel für die GC-FID Methode auf ca. 50% reduziert wurde.<br />Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass der Eracheck® eine brauchbare Alternative zu den bestehenden Standardmethoden zur Bestimmung des Öl-in-Wasser-Gehaltes bietet. Die Vorteile sind ein großer Messbereich und eine gute Reproduzierbarkeit, gemeinsam mit einer einfachen Handhabung und der Verwendung eines umweltfreundlicheren Lösungsmittels.<br />

This diploma thesis comprises three parts. The first part concerns the comparison of artificial samples provided by industry when using three different analysis procedures; the well known DIN38409-H18 that uses an IR Instrument at approx. 3000cm-1 and Freon-113 as solvent; its replacement standard ISO9377-2 that uses an GC-FID measurement and i.e. hexane as solvent; and the new prototype developed by QuantaRed Technologies (Eracheck®) in cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology that uses a quantum cascade laser (QCL) in the mid-IR at approx. 1,370-1,380cm-1 in combination with a cyclic hydrocarbon (i.e.<br />cyclohexane) as solvent.<br />Secondly, the influence of the sample preparation was determined for all three methods in order to suggest a sample preparation for the Eracheck® that provides the necessary precision of the results and reduces the required handling as much as possible.<br />Finally, samples from the water treatment plant in Schönkirchen were analysed using the established DIN38409-H18 standard, as well as the Eracheck®.<br />It could be shown that the applied method, using the Eracheck®, had a linear range of 0.5 to 1,000 ppm with a repeatability between 0.2 to 0.5 ppm (depending on the range of measurement) for crude oil in water and the results were comparable with the two standard methods, when the calibration was made with the oil in question. This range is approx. a factor 10 larger than for the other available methods.<br />Using the suggested reference substances instead of the crude oil for calibration reduced the recovery rate for both standard methods, compared to the measurements using the crude oil in question for calibration. While the recovery rate for the Eracheck® remained in an acceptable range, it was reduced for the GC-FID method down to approximately 50%.<br />It could be shown that the Eracheck® provides a viable alternative for the existing standard methods for the determination of oil in water content, due the large range of measurement and the good reproducibility, together with easy handling and the use of an environmentally friendlier solvent.
