Gemeinsam im Gemeindebau : Transformation einer Wohnhausanlage

Abstract

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Transformation eines bestehenden Gemeindebaus, der Johann Böhm Wohnhausanlage, aus den 1960ern. Die Wohnhausanlagen der Gemeinde aus der Nachkriegskriegszeit stellen eine wesentliche Ressource zur nachhaltigen Nachverdichtung der Stadt dar und sind Ausdruck einer bestimmten normativen Wohnvorstellung, die im Rahmen eines Entwurfs auf Adaptions- und Erweiterungsmöglichkeiten untersucht wird. Die Bestandswohnungen werden um eine Raumschicht erweitert. Neuer Wohn- und Arbeitsraum wird innerhalb von Aufstockungen und Neubauten geschaffen. Das Erdgeschoß wird für gemeinschaftliche und wohnfremde Nutzung umgestaltet und der Freiraum als kollektiver Raum aktiviert. Etwas Neues entsteht aus dem Alten. Der Gemeindebau prägt Wien und stellt einen wichtigen Bestandteil der Wohnraumversorgung dar. Auf der Suche nach einem neuen sozialen Wohnen, definiert die vorliegende Arbeit den Gemeindebau als Gemeingut: Ein Gemeindebau, der Raum für Gemeinsames schafft und Raum für Aneignung lässt. Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich einerseits mit der Definition und unserem heutigen, aus der Moderne kommenden, Verständnis von Privatsphäre im Wohnen und andererseits mit kollektiven Wohnformen, in denen gewisse Tätigkeiten in der, zwischen privater und öffentlicher Sphäre liegenden, kollektiven Sphäre stattfinden.Der Fokus auf die Kernfamilie im Roten Wien verhalf dem modernen Wohnen zum Durchbruch und wurde in der Wohnbaupolitik des Wohlfahrtsstaates fortgeführt. Waren Gemeinschaftseinrichtungen zur Kollektivierung im Roten Wien noch wesentlicher Bestandteil, so sind diese in den Gemeindebauten der Nachkriegszeit kaum vorhanden.Die theoretische und typologische Auseinandersetzung mit Wohnraum, der Polarität von Gemeinschaft und Privatheit, sowie dem Bestand des Gemeindebaus schaffen Grundlagen für ein Entwurfsprojekt. Es wird dabei die These aufgestellt, dass in einem neuen Gemeindebau das Angebot an Wohnungsformen diverser und der Fokus auf das Gemeinsame größer sein sollte.

The present thesis deals with the transformation of an existing Gemeindebau, the Johann Böhm resi-dential complex, built in the 1960s.The residential complexes of the post-war period represent an essential resource for the sustainable redensification of the city and are an expression of certain normative housing concepts, which are exam-ined in the context of a design proposal. The existing apartments are expanded by one spatial layer. New living and working space is created within the addi-tion of storeys and new buildings. The ground floor is redesigned for communal and non-residential use and the open space is activated as a collective space. Something new is created from the old.Gemeindebauten are characteristic of Vienna and are and essential part of meeting the need for housing. In search of a new type of social housing, this thesis defines municipal housing as common good: Com-munal buildings which make room for collectivity and leave room for appropriation.This thesis is dealing on the one hand with the conceptual understanding of privacy in regards to modernism and on the other hand with collective forms of living that allow activities to take place in the collective sphere. In the period of Red Vienna an emphasis was taken on ideals of the core family which leveraged a modern way of living and was continued in housing policies of the welfare economy. While communal fa-cilities were an essential part of housing politics in Red Vienna, they are hardly present in post-war residential buildings.The theoretical and typological examination of living space, the polarity of communal and private, as well as the reconceptualisation of existing Gemeinde-bauten create the basis for the design proposal. It is argued that in municipal housing the range of types should be more diverse and an emphasise should be taken on the commons.
