Jelavić, T. (2021). Paromlin - adaptation of an urban ruin [Diploma Thesis, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://doi.org/10.34726/hss.2021.76343
Paromlin is one of those neuralgic spots in the city. Once the spearhead of the industrial revolution in Zagreb and Croatia as a whole, it now stands as a literal shell of its former self, a constant reminder of wasted potential. The old steam mill sits at the entrance to the city center, and is left to fend for itself, slowly but surely losing the war with time. The aim of this project is the exploration of adaptation, revitalization, communication and production. Adaptation of the Paromlin complex, reprogramming it for the needs of a contemporary city and its contemporary citizens. Revitalization of the area, transforming the steam mill and the neighboring industrial complex Gredelj into the new city center. Communication and demystification of art and design, both inside the profession and out, in an effort to remove artificially created boundaries between experts and the public. A return of production, and industry on a small scale, to the city.
