Jakomini Park Quartier : Entwurf einer Aufstockung aus Holz unter Aspekten der urbanen, sozialen und baulichen Nachhaltigkeit

Abstract

Österreichs Städte wachsen. Immer mehr Menschen ziehen vom Land in die Stadt. Geeigneten Wohnraum für die neuen BewohnerInnen zu schaffen, ist eine der großen Herausforderungen für ArchitektInnen und StadtplanerInnen. Es gilt unter anderem, die grundlegende Entscheidung zu treffen, ob man innerstädtisch bestehende Quartiere erweitern oder im suburbanen Raum neu bauen möchte. Damit einher geht eine Abwägung zwischen fortschreitender Bodenversiegelung und Verbauung von Freiflächen innerhalb der Stadt, die in Zeiten der Klimakrise besser als Frei- und Grünräume genutzt werden könnten, und dem Zurückgreifen auf baulichen Bestand. Das Bauen auf der grünen Wiese ist hier oft die einfachere Alternative. Ziel der Forschungsarbeit ist es, die Vorzüge der innerstädtischen, vertikalen Nachverdichtung gegenüber der vorherrschenden Abriss- und Neubau-Politik anhand des Entwurfs einer Umnutzung und Aufstockung einer 120 Jahre alten Autolackiererei in Graz darzustellen. Um zu einem schlüssigen Ergebnis zu kommen, gilt es, sich zunächst mit theoretischen Aspekten einer solchen Nachverdichtung auseinanderzusetzen. In diesem Kontext werden drei unterschiedliche Arten der Nachhaltigkeit definiert, die zu berücksichtigen sind: die urbane Nachhaltigkeit, die soziale Nachhaltigkeit und die bauliche Nachhaltigkeit. Hauptteil der Arbeit bildet der anschließende Praxisteil in Form des Entwurfs, der die zuvor behandelten Themen in einer Gestalt vereint.

Austria’s cities are growing. More and more people are moving from the countryside to the cities. Creating suitable living space for these new residents is one of today’s great challenges for architects and urban planners. Among other things, the fundamental decision must be made as to whether we want to expand existing quarters in the city center or build new ones in the suburban area. This goes hand in hand with a trade-off between the progressing of soil sealing and the loss of open and green spaces within cities, which are becoming increasingly important in the context of our climate crisis, and the decision of working with existing buildings. Building on an open green field is often the simpler alternative.The aim of this research paper is to show the advantages of inner-city, vertical densification by comparison with the prevailing idea of demolition and new construction, demonstrated through the design of the conversion and expansion of a 120-year-old car paint shop in Graz.In order to arrive at a conclusive result, it is first necessary to deal with the theoretical aspects of such redensification. In this context, three different types of sustainability are defined that need to be considered: urban sustainability, social sustainability, and structural sustainability. The core of the thesis is the subsequent practical part focusing on the actual design that unites the previously elaborated types of sustainability in one form.
