Abstract:

The drying behavior of screed plays a decisive role on the construction site during the finishing phase in order to avoid later damage due to residual moisture. A number of factors can influence the moisture balance in the screed, including the application of a floor covering. The purpose of the tests carried out was to determine the influence of the floor covering on the drying behavior of the screed. For this reason, two cement screed samples with a thickness of 7,5 cm were concreted and covered with a tile and parquet floor covering following the first curing phase on the 42nd day. Measuring the relative humidity at five levels distributed over the sample height made it possible to record the changes in humidity due to heating and covering installation. The results showed that the screed lost moisture at all measurement levels during the bake-out and rapidly reached high moisture values of around 90 - 100 % when the covering was laid. In particular, the upper third of the sample dried out quickly without covering and very quickly resumed high moisture values with covering.
