Abstract:
Commitment in the sense of a voluntary obligation to strategic decisions is an essential condition for the acquisition of lasting competititive advantages. Commitment to specific, not or at least only difficult imitatable resources opens a company the chance to build up and keep upright some kind of entry barriers for the defense of supernatural net returns during a certain period of time. Via abandoning own freedom of action it is possible to signal a behavior to competitors that otherwise would be unreliable. Thus the behavior of these competitors can perhaps be affected for the own advantage. Trade-offs between pros and cons, chances and risks that are connected with commitment will be analyzed with the tools of game theory. On this basis statements can be derived over the optimal range and time of irreversible investments. As Commitment strategies in this work we regard the well known strategy of time leadership, investments in research and development and the structure of a firm's internal organization. Thereby the internal organization is modelled by behavior influence of managers via a performance-oriented remuneration contract. Next to the simple profit maximizing effect the economic analysis also identified a strategic effect that is induced by strategic decisions. "Strategically" in this perception activities are named, which affect the competitive position and thus have repercussion to the reachability of business objectives. With the help of an economic model the present work examines the strategies regarding the change of the reachability of business objectives, if there exists free choice of using different commitment strategies. We show that profit-maximizing entrepreneurs behave in a competitive position fundamentally differently compared to autarky. They consciously trigger their managers to turn away from pure profit maximizing behaviour by admitting a further performance measure to the remuneration contract. Also the adoption of R&D efforts depends on the intensity of competition. One additional finding is that an enterprise concentrates always only on one variable for strategic commitment. Depending upon situation, particularly regarding the time of the market entrance, different commitment strategies can be identified as favourable. Therefore next to personnel, organizational and legal frameworks effects of competition must be considered while designing business strategies.
