Ein neuer Markt am Linzer Südbahnhof

Abstract

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Neugestaltung des bestehenden Marktgebietes des Linzer Südbahnhofmarktes. Der Entwurf gibt eine Vorstellung davon, wie eine potenzielle Neubebauung und das zukünftige Erscheinungsbild des Marktes gestaltet sein und welche Funktionen darüber hinaus integriert werden können. Der Linzer Südbahnhofmarkt verbindet in seinem Namen und an seinem Standort zwei bedeutende Aspekte der Linzer Stadtgeschichte, die Geschichte der Linzer Märkte, als Nahversorger und Handelsplätze und die Geschichte der Pferdeeisenbahn, als zu ihrer Zeit verkehrstechnische Pionierleistung. Auf die Geschichte der Pferdeeisenbahn sowie auf den historischen Markthandel in Linz wird im ersten Teil der Arbeit eingegangen.Der gegenwärtige Zustand des Südbahnhofmarktes wird umfassend dokumentiert. Der Markt wurde zu Beginn der 1950er Jahre errichtet und seither nur unwesentlich verändert. Die Analyse befasst sich mit den Vorteilen, wie dem historische Baumbestand, aber auch mit den Defiziten des Marktes, wie Schäden an Bauten und Infrastruktur. Sowohl die bauliche Anordnung der Marktstände als auch deren Architekturentsprechen nicht mehr heutigen Anforderungen, sowohl der Kunden als auch der Händler. Der Markt verzeichnet trotz eines attraktiven Warenangebotes einen Rückgang an Kunden. Der neue Entwurf schlägt nicht nur den vollständigen Abriss und Neubau, sondern darüberhinaus auch eine neue Anordnung der Marktkojen vor. Die neuen Marktstände werden zweigeschossig errichtet. Durch diese Aufstockung entstehen multifunktionale Räume mit vielfältigen Nutzungsoptionen. Diese sollen vor allem ein junges Zielpublikum ansprechen. Ein Zubau um Markt enthält, neben Wohnungen, auch ein Marktamt, das zentral für alle Linzer Märkte auf den Südbahnhofmarkt übersiedeln soll. Maßnahmen, wie eine Umorganisation des Lieferverkehrs, oder die Schaffung einer großzügigen Überdachung auch für mobile Marktfahrer, erhöhen den Komfort für Standbetreiber und Kunden. Eine Neugestaltung des Freiraums schafft Platz für Veranstaltungen. Sie umfasst auch die Einbindung der beiden denkmalgeschützten Bauten, das ehemalige Bahnkanzleigebäude und das Verwaltungsgebäude der Pferdeeisenbahn, in das Marktareal, die auf den historischen Hintergrund des Platzes verweisen. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist ein Entwurf für die moderne und zukunftstaugliche Gestaltung dieses Areals durch einen Entwurf mit baulichem und sozialem Konzept. Die Schaffung neuer Räume und Freiräume mit Nutzungsoptionen, die über Gastronomie und Verkauf hinausgehen, soll mehr als nur neue Käuferschichten für den Markt gewinnen. Der Südbahnhofmarkt soll durch die vorgeschlagene Neugestaltung nicht nur als attraktiver Einkaufsort erhalten, sondern auch zu einem modernen Treffpunkt und urbanen Zentrum für das Viertel, die Stadt und deren Besucher werden.

This master thesis devotes itself to the redesignof the Südbahnhof market space in Linz. The design gives an idea of how new facilities, buildingsand the future appearance of the market can beshaped and how social aspects can be integrated.The Südbahnhof market’s name and its locationrefer to important aspects of local history – the city’s historical market trade and the horse-drawnrailway, once connecting Linz with Budweis and Gmunden, back in its time a pioneering achievement of traffic engineering. The issues will beexplained detailed in the first part of the thesis.The current state of the Südbahnhof market will be comprehensively documented. The market was built at the beginning of the 1950s and has since then only marginally changed. The analysis deals with its benefits, such as the historical tree population, but also with the deficits of the market, such as the damage to buildings and infrastructure. Both the structural arrangement of the market stalls as well as their architecture no longer meet today's requirements of merchant and customers. Despite an attractive product range, the market continuously records a decline in customers.The new design not only proposes the demolition and reconstruction, but also a new arrangement of the market booths. In addition, the new market stalls will now have twofloors with space for multifunctional rooms offering diverse usage options. First of all, this should address a young target audience.A future annex to existing buildings shall include not only shops and apartments, but also the central administration department to all markets in Linz. A reorganization of delivery traffic, or a generous roofing for mobile marketers are intended to increase convenience for stall-keepers and customers. A redesign of the public space creates an opportunity for events. It also includes the integration of the two listed buildings, the former railway office building and the formeradministration building of the horse-drawn railway, into the market area, in order to remind of the historical background of the place.The thesis aims at proposing a modern and future-proof redesign of this area through a concept with structural and social aspects. Newrooms and open spaces with usage optionsthat go beyond gastronomy and sale are supposed to provoke more than just an attraction of new groups of buyers to the market.The future Südbahnhof market should therefore be more than an attractive shopping location,but also a state of the art meeting point and urban center for the district, the city and its visitors.
