This thesis deals with the numerical simulation of the flow in an impulse turbine cascade using CFD. The main focus is on the investigation of the Mach number influence on the flow. Initially, a literature review was carried out to understand, which factors play an important role at supersonic conditions. Part of the work was also to develop a simple, theoretical model using the potential theory, in order to be able to estimate the flow conditions quickly and easily. The geometry is a symmetrical impulse turbine cascade with sharp edges and a degree of reaction of Rk = 0. In the simulated cases, the Mach number of the incident flow is in a range of Ma1 = 0.2 to 2. Superheated steam, modeled as an ideal gas, is used as flow medium. In the results section, the results from the CFD simulations and those from the potential theory are compared and evaluated with one another, but also with theoretical and experimental results from relevant literature. Basically, there is a good agreement of the CFD results with the results of the potential theory. Since the potential theory does not take viscous effects into account, there are slight deviations near the walls. The flow velocity reaches the speed of sound for the first time at Ma1 = 0.71. From an incident Mach number of Ma1 = 1, compressibility influences increase significantly in weight, which become noticeable through compression shocks and expansion. In addition, important flow parameters are analyzed and compared. Qualitatively, similar characteristics can be observed. Due to the special geometry and the occurrence of gas dynamic effects, it is difficult to quantitatively compare the results obtained. With this work, however, first steps have been taken that contribute to a better understanding of the topic.
