The unsteady heat transfer during the single or double-acting lubricated meshing of the teeth flanks of a spur gear is considered on a rigorous basis. To this end, the flanks are taken as perfectly rigid, and the associated problem of pure hydrodynamic lubrication solved analytically/numerically. This yields the pressure distribution along the flanks for a given torque, the geometry of the actual lubrication gap and the flow velocity along and perpendicularly to the latter. In case of double meshing required the two-sided coupling of the individual lubrication problems. Specifically, water as lubricant, a currently appealing substitute for oil in applications such as marine transmissions, is in the focus. Here the pressure-dependence of viscosity (piezo effect) proves central and is accounted for in an iterative manner. The thereby found lubricant velocity enters the convection-diffusion controlled temperature distribution. In addition, the danger of the formation of a cavitation bubble downstream of the pressure maximum is predicted. All in all, the study points to an indeed encouraging potential of water as lubricant. However, the results also underpin the need for incorporating elasticity of the flanks and possibly mixed lubrication in an improved theoretical model as future tasks.
