Laser beam scanning displays are using lasers and either one 2D or two 1D scanning MEMS mirrors. They are able to deliver high brightness at a compact form factor. As the MEMS is a key component it is also the limiting factor regarding the possible resolution and refresh rate of the display. The most critical properties are the line density and scanning speed. Improving these two performance criteria would pave the way generate high resolution images and facilitate the development of wearable AR devices. This work addresses the development of a reference prefilter to improve the dynamic response of a bi-resonant piezoelectric MEMS mirror. Typical Lissajous scan via a bi-resonant MEMS mirror has the highest scan line density at the edges and corners. This reference prefilter is applied for an amplitude control of a MEMS mirror and manipulates the scan pattern to increase the scan line density of the Lissajous pattern and allows to perform region of interest based scanning. The reference prefilter is not designed by global model but exploits local models near the fast and slow resonances. To create the local linear model, measurement signals by piezoelectric electrodes on the mirror and the optical amplitude measurements are evaluated and used to develop the input trajectory. The best amplitude modulated trajectory is investigated by simulation of various modulation functions and used to distribute the Lissajous scan lines as evenly as possible on the one hand, and on the other hand, to design a region of interest for higher line density in a certain part. The designed reference prefilter allows to increase the modulation bandwidth of the mirror for a simple step modulation from 18 to 180 Hz for the fast mirror axis and from 5.6 to 38.5 Hz for the slow axis. The increased modulation bandwidth allows for the chosen exponential modulation function to increase the line density threefold in the outer part of the image, while it increases twice in the center. The region of interest scan allows certain parts of the image to be scanned with up to 5 times higher line density, compared to the unmodulated scan pattern. The results show that it is possible to use a reference prefilter to improve the modulation bandwidth of a piezoelectric MEMS mirror and demonstrate that amplitude modulation for Lissajous trajectories has the potential to influence the scan line density and increase the density throughout the scan area or selectively in individual areas.
