Abstract:

This thesis shows the potential of natural stone in a load-bearing function in the Donaumarina high-rise project. The author explores the question of designing a high-rise building in solid construction under today‘s conditions. The project set in the city of Vienna at the Donaumarina subway station examines the possibilities of using natural stone in building construction.Starting from the study of the Monadnock Block by Burnham and Root, a high-rise building in brick solid construction, the turning point to the modern high-rise building in steel skeleton construction during the school of Chicago is illuminated. Further, the author discusses the history of building into the vertical in general and the history of the Vienna skyscraper in specific. This is followed by an investigation of the material natural stone, with a description of the material used in the project, the St. Margarethen sand-lime brick. In the project, the knowledge gained is implemented in the design of a high-rise building with natural ashlar in a load-bearing function. In addition to the load-bearing concept, the design focuses on issues such as shape, proportion and scale of individual design elements. The proposed hybrid use of office space and living is responded to in the floor plan.
