Abstract:

In countries of the global South it has been shown that the quality of life increases rapidly with the electrical energy consumption. Small wind turbines(SWT) are used in many places to provide electrical energy at locations without grid access and with good wind conditions. Approximately 1,000 Piggott SWTs are in operation worldwide, which are characterised by their low threshold and resource-saving design. Often, the operation of SWTs fails due to a lack of maintenance and avoidable faults, which leads to a total loss of the plant. This results in the need for the development of a condition monitoring system(CMS). These are established for wind turbines in the MW range with vibration data as input variable, which is measured using acceleration sensors. Basedon electrical signature analysis (ESA), the plant’s condition can be monitored without a sensor on the wind turbine. Faults in the turbine are detected by changes in the generator voltage or current. A common fault in Piggott turbine operation is rotor deflection, which occurs when the bearing screw loosens. The effects of rotor deflection on the generator voltage at no load of the 2F12Ptype generator are investigated experimentally. The quadratic mean value of the voltage drops by 0.4 V at rated speed when the rotor is deflected and the harmonic content of the voltage increases. Inparticular, the amplitudes of the harmonics increase with ordinal numbers 3, 5and 9.An alternative is the detection of the rotor deflection via the leakage field witha Hall sensor. It is shown that the rotor deflection can be detected with acommercially available and in expensive Hall sensor.
