Cultural heritage mapping is not only relevant for World Heritage sites, but should be applied to all sites in order to preserve the material part of the collective memory. Only on the basis of a comprehensive mapping it is possible to set sustainable measures for the meaningful manage­ment and thus the conservation of the cultural heritage. In the class, the basic framework for mapping cultural heritage is presented. lt is essential that the people living in or around cultural heritage sites are recognized as experts in the field. After all, they are the ones who are ulti­mately responsible for its conservation on a daily basis. All scientists who are involved in the preservation of cultural heritage can help to protect the values in responsible cooperation with the population. lt is important to communicate on an equal footing.
