Alloying concept for improving B-solubility in Ti–B–N hard coatings

Abstract

Titan-basierte Legierungen, wie Titannitrid (TiN), weisen ausgezeichnete mechanische Eigenschaften auf. Durch die Zugabe von B, können einige dieser Eigenschaften noch verbessert werden. Der vollständige Einbau von B in das kubisch-flächenzentrierte (kfz)-TiN Kristallgitter ist jedoch begrenzt und bedarf weiterer Untersuchungen. Im Rahmen dieser Diplomarbeit sollte der Erfolg des vorgeschlagenen Legierungskonzepts nachgewiesen werden. Das Konzept beruht auf der verbesserten Löslichkeit von Bor, ohne die Bildung von sekundären Phasen, begünstigt durch einen leicht überstöchiometrischen Metallgehalt. Die Konsequenzen für die thermische Stabilität der so entstanden Titanbornitrid (Ti–X–B–N; mit X = Ti, Cr oder Zr) Schichten sollte ebenfalls überprüft werden.Dafür wurden Ti–B–N Schichten, mit zunehmendem Anteil an Ti (1.6 – 10.2 at.%), Cr (0.8 – 10.3 at.%) und Zr (0.7 – 12.2 at.%), in einem nicht reaktiven DC Magnetronsputter Prozess abgeschieden, während der Borgehalt quasi konstant gehalten wurde (~10 at.%). Bei der Beschichtung wurde ein gepresstes Ti–B–N Verbundtarget aus 50 at.% Titan, 40 at.% Stickstoff (N) und 10 at.% Bor verwendet, auf das kleine Stücke des jeweiligen Legierungselements (Ti, Cr oder Zr) aufgelegt wurden. Zusätzlich wurde eine Schicht nur mit dem Target, ohne zusätzliches Legierungselement, als Referenz hergestellt. Die kombinierte Mikrostrukturanalyse aus Röntgenbeugung (XRD) und Rasterelektronenmikroskopie (REM) zeigt, dass die vollständige Löslichkeit von B im kfz-Gitter von Titannitrid (TiN) durch die Zugabe von ~2 at.% Zr bzw. ~3 at.% Ti erreicht werden kann. Die Zugabe von ~5 at.% Cr resultierte in verbesserter, aber nicht vollständiger, B-Löslichkeit.Die chemische Zusammensetzung wurde durch Elastische Rückstreudetektionsanalyse (ERDA) (ergänzt durch Energiedispersive Röntgenspektroskopie (EDX) und Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse (XRF)) bestimmt und die Härte (H) und der Elastizitäts-Modul (E-Modul) durch Nanoindentations-Experimente ermittelt, wobei die Werte wenig von der Referenzschicht abweichen (H: 33.4 GPa, E: 344.7 GPa).Für die Glühstudie wurden die Referenzschicht und Cr-legierte Schichten (5.1 – 39.3 at.% Cr) in einem Vakuumglühofen geglüht (mit 700, 800, 900, 1,000 and 1,200 °C für je 10 min.) und anschließend mit XRD untersucht. Die Beschichtung mit 5.1 at.% an zugegebenem Cr weist gegenüber der Referenzschicht eine deutlich erhöhte thermische Stabilität auf, mit einer hohen Härte (29.8 GPa) auch nach dem Glühen bei 1,200 °.

Titanium nitride (TiN) offers excellent mechanical properties, some of which can be further enhanced by adding B. Unfortunately, the amount of B that can be fully incorporated into the face-centered cubic (fcc)-TiN lattice is limited and still needs investigating. This master thesis aims to verify the proposed alloying concept based on improved B solubility, without secondary phase formation, facilitated by a slightly over-stoichiometric metal content and the consequences on the thermal stability of the resulting Titaniumboronnitride (Ti–X–B–N; with X = Ti, Cr or Zr) thin films.For this purpose, Ti–B–N coatings alloyed with varying concentrations of Ti (1.6 – 10.2 at.%), Cr (0.8 – 10.3 at.%), and Zr (0.7 – 12.2 at.%) were deposited, while keeping the B concentration nearly constant (~10 at.%). The depositions were done by non-reactive DC magnetron sputtering with a pressed Ti–B–N compound target (50 at.% Ti, 40 at.% N, 10 at.% B) and small pieces of the respective alloying element. For reference, one coating was produced with the target alone. Following the coating process, the influence of the different amounts of Ti, Cr, and Zr on the microstructure and the lattice parameters was analyzed via XRD. The combined microstructural analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the complete solubility of B in the face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice of titanium nitride (TiN) can be achieved by the addition of ~2 at.% Zr or ~3 at.% Ti, respectively. The addition of ~5 at.% Cr resulted in enhanced, but not full, B-solubility.The chemical composition was determined mainly by Elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) (supplemented with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF)) and the hardness (H) and Young’s moduli (E) with nanoindentation, yielding values close to the reference coating (H: 33.4 GPa, E: 344.7 GPa).In the annealing study, the reference coating and Cr-alloyed coatings (5.1 – 39.3 at.% Cr) were annealed in a vacuum furnace (at 700, 800, 900, 1,000, and 1,200 °C for 10 min. each) and subsequently characterized with XRD—the coating with 5.1 at.% Cr exhibited a significantly improved thermal stability compared to the reference coating, with high hardness (29.8 GPa) after annealing at 1,200 °C.
