Metal chalcogen based molecular clusters for light-driven hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract

Die steigende globale Energieanforderung und die Erschöpfung fossiler Brennstoffe mit den damit verbundenen Nachhaltigkeitsherausforderungen und der globalen Erwärmung erfordern die Erforschung effizienter und erneuerbarer Energiequellen. Die photokatalytische Wasserspaltung ist eine praktikable Strategie, um grünen Wasserstoff mit erneuerbaren Ressourcen zu produzieren. Allerdings stammen die meisten dieser erneuerbaren Materialien aus Edelmetallen, die knapp und kostspielig sind. Daher werden in dieser Dissertation erdreichreiche Chalkogenid-basierte molekulare Cluster (Polyoxometallate und Thiomolybdate) als Katalysatoren/Ko-Katalysatoren für die photokatalytische Wasserstoffentwicklungsreaktion (HER) untersucht. Im ersten Teil dieser Dissertation präsentiere ich einen umfangreichen Überblick über das relevante Fachgebiet mit Beispielen aus der Literatur, die Thiomolybdate für die elektrokatalytische und photokatalytische Wasserstoffentwicklungsreaktion einsetzen. Dieser Überblick diskutiert die aktiven Stellen des Thiomolybdat-Clusters, die für die Wasserstoffentwicklungsreaktion in homogenen und heterogenen Phasen verantwortlich sind. Weiterhin werden die möglichen Reaktionsmechanismen, die Heterogenisierung auf verschiedenen Substraten und die Struktur-Aktivitäts-Beziehung hervorgehoben. Das erste experimentelle Projekt dieser Dissertation war die Untersuchung der photokatalytischen Wasserstoffentwicklungsleistung eines homogenen Photosystems durch den Einsatz von molekularen Clustern als Katalysatoren, in unserem Fall neuartige Ni-basierte POMs (Ni12W27 und Ni12W30). Ich zeige, dass die HER-Leistung dieser neuen Ni-POMs den Benchmark Ni4W18 POM übertrifft und von der Anzahl der Cuban-Kerne in der POM-Struktur abhängt. Das Ni12W30 POM zeigt eine außergewöhnliche Quantenausbeute von 10,42%, die bisher die höchste für Ni-basierte POMs berichtete ist. Des Weiteren untersuche ich den HER-Mechanismus durch Photolumineszenzspektroskopie (PL) und demonstriere die Faktoren, die die Leistung der Ni-POMs unter Umsatzbedingungen einschränken. Da die Stabilität eines solchen Photosystems durch den Einsatz eines organischen Photosensibilisators beeinträchtigt wird, war das nächste Ziel, einen heterogenen Photokatalysator zu entwerfen, bei dem der molekulare Cluster durch Anbindung an einen lichtabsorbierenden festen Oxidträger stabilisiert wird. Im zweiten experimentellen Projekt dieser Dissertation setzte ich den Mo3S13 (Mo3) Cluster als Ko-Katalysator und Titandioxid (TiO2) als Träger und Photosensibilisator ein. Die Cluster werden durch die Bildung einer starken Mo-O-Ti-Bindung an Titandioxid angebunden. Ich zeige, dass die Anbindung streng von der Oberfläche des Trägers abhängt. Der Mo3/TiO2-Photokatalysator zeigt sich als hochaktiv und stabil, was darauf hindeutet, dass Mo3 die Wasserstoffentwicklungsreaktion effektiv co-katalysieren kann. Die thermische Behandlung des Mo3/TiO2-Photokatalysators unter Stickstoff- und Sauerstoffatmosphäre verringerte seine Aktivität. Daher wird gefolgert, dass die strukturelle Kohärenz und die ursprüngliche Konfiguration der Disulfid-Liganden entscheidend für die Leistung des Ko/Katalysators sind. Das letzte Projekt dieser Dissertation war die Entwicklung eines heterogenen Photosystems, das lichtabsorbierende Träger verwendet, um einen direkten Vergleich zum homogenen Photosystem mit typischen Ruthenium-Photosensibilisatoren (Mo3/Ru) zu ermöglichen. Daher setze ich einen metallfreien Kohlenstoffnitrid-Träger für die Anbindung von Mo3-Clustern ein, um ein Mo3/GCN-heterogenes Photosystem zu etablieren. Ich optimiere die Bedingungen für die Wasserstoffentwicklungsreaktion beider Photosysteme, indem ich die Konzentration/Beladung des Katalysators/Ko-Katalysators und die Art des Opferdonors ändere. Beide Photosysteme zeigen ähnliche Umsatzzahlen (TOFs) pro Mo3-Cluster. Jedoch übertrifft das Mo3/GCN-Photosystem in Bezug auf Stabilität das Mo3/Ru-Photosystem. Daher komme ich zu dem Schluss, dass das homogene Photosystem trotz vielversprechender HER-Aktivität im Vergleich zum heterogenen Photosystem nicht stabil ist. Insgesamt kombiniere und vergleiche ich in dieser Dissertation homogene und heterogene photokatalytische Ansätze mit molekularen Clustern und funktionalen anorganischen Substraten, um die Einschränkungen beider Photosysteme anzugehen. Ich unterstreiche weiterhin die Bedeutung der Heterogenisierung zur Verbesserung der HER-Aktivität/Stabilität und entwirre Reaktionsmechanismen/aktive Stellen. Meine Forschungsergebnisse bieten nicht nur grundlegende Einblicke in die Struktur-Aktivitäts-Beziehung, Leistung und Stabilität, sondern legen auch die Grundlage für die Entwicklung von Photosystemen, die andere komplexe molekulare Cluster zur Erzeugung von Wasserstoffkraftstoff einsetzen.

The rising global energy demand and the depletion of fossil fuels with associated sustainability challenges and global warming require the exploration of efficient and renewable energy sources. Photocatalytic water splitting is a viable strategy to produce green hydrogen using renewable resources. However, most of these renewable materials come from noble metals thatare scarce and costly. Therefore, in this thesis earth abundant chalcogenide-based molecular clusters (polyoxometalates and thiomolybdates) are investigated as catalysts/co-catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In the first part of this thesis, I present an extensive review of the relevant field featuring examples from literature employing thiomolybdates for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. This review discusses the active sites of the thiomolybdate clusterresponsible for hydrogen evolution reaction in homogeneous and heterogeneous phases. It further highlights the possible reaction mechanisms, heterogenization on different substrates, and the structure-activity relationship.The first experimental project of this thesis was to examine the photocatalytic hydrogenevolution performance of a homogeneous photosystem by employing molecular clusters as catalysts i.e. novel Ni-based POMs (Ni12W27 and Ni12W30) in our case. I show that the HER performance of these novel Ni-POMs surpasses the benchmark Ni4W18 POM and is dependent on the number of cubane cores in the POM structure. The Ni12W30 POM exhibits an exceptional quantum yield of 10.42% which is so far the highest reported for Ni-based POMs.Furthermore, I investigate the HER mechanism through photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL)and demonstrate the factors that restrict the performance of Ni-POMs under turnover conditions. Since the stability of such a photosystem is compromised due to the use of organic photosensitizer, the next aim was to design a heterogeneous photocatalyst in which the molecular cluster is stabilized by attaching it to a light-absorbing solid-state oxide support. In the second experimental project of this thesis, I employed Mo3S13 (Mo3) cluster as a co-catalyst andtitania (TiO2) as a support and photosensitizer. The clusters are attached to titania by forminga strong Mo-O-Ti bond. I show that the attachment is strictly dependent on the surface area of support. The Mo3/TiO2 photocatalyst is shown to be highly active and stable suggesting that Mo3 can effectively co-catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction. Thermal treatment of Mo3/TiO2 photocatalyst under nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere lowered its activity. Therefore, it is concluded that the structural coherence and the original configuration of disulfide ligands are critical in determining the performance of co/catalyst. The final project of this thesis was to develop a heterogeneous photosystem utilizing visible light absorbing support to allow for the direct comparison to the homogeneous photosystem featuring typical ruthenium photosensitizer (Mo3/Ru). Therefore, I employ a metal-free carbon nitride support for the attachment of Mo3 clusters to establish Mo3/GCN heterogeneous photosystem. I optimize the hydrogen evolution reaction conditions of both the photosystems by changing the concentration/loading of the catalyst/co-catalyst and the kind of sacrificial donor used. Both the photosystems show similar turnover numbers (TOFs) per Mo3 cluster. However, in terms of stability, the Mo3/GCN photosystem outperforms the Mo3/Ru photosystem. Therefore, I conclude that the homogeneous photosystem despite showing promising HER activity is not stable compared to the heterogeneous photosystem. Overall in this thesis, I combine and compare the homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic approaches featuring molecular clusters and functional inorganic substrates to tackle the limitations of both photosystems. I further underline the significance of heterogenization to improve HER activity/stability and unravel reaction mechanisms/active sites. My research outcomes not only provide fundamental insights into the structure-activity relationship, performance, and stability but also lay the foundation to develop photosystems employing other complex molecular clusters to generate hydrogen fuel.
