Valente, M. (2024).

This master’s thesis focusses on sustainable development, particularly in the construction industry. The emphasis is placed on the topic of sensible resource utilisation. In the explanations and analyses, important terms and their legal framework are explained in the context of sustainability and supplemented with philosophical texts by Gilles Clément. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the urgency of a methodology for sustainable design that enables a timely change in the construction industry. International climate and economic data as well as current EU and Austrian legal texts are used for the scientific analyses. In addition, building demolitions were inspected and interviews conducted. As a result, a compendium was compiled. This is intended to link Clément’s gesture of gardening with a sustainable ecological economy for future work. This work is divided into three parts. The first part with its three chapters is the theoretical substructure, in which sustainable assessments and design principles are presented and supplemented by essays. The following questions are addressed: Why is the construction industry important for sustainable development? How can the current legal situation be applied now or in the near future to expand cascading thinking in construction with a cyclical approach? What does Re: Usability, durability and refurbishment mean in the context of sustainable development? In the second part, projects approved for reuse or further use are analysed and a secondary building product catalogue is presented. In the third part, the collected results are applied in a design and the following question on the methodology for sustainable design is addressed: How do you plan the built world for future generations from local resources when this resource is the building component stock? Material-appropriate application proposals are discussed and illustrated using two example projects in Burgenland. The respective uses are worked out in a participatory manner with the stakeholders. The components used for the construction come from the component catalogue and are supplemented with building materials already available on site. The analyses of the climate data show that the construction industry is connected to all emission-relevant areas and can therefore play a decisive role in achieving the climate targets. An essential criterion for this is durability. On the one hand, by preserving and renovating existing buildings. On the other hand, by obliging the Re: Use and further Utilisation of building components as resources in new buildings and making the production of construction waste financially unattractive. On a socio-economic level, an important factor in conserving resources is understanding the differences between Re: Use of building components and materials and Re: Recycling of waste.
