Abstract:

Szigetköz is not only my home region, it is also the largest contiguous group of islands in Hungary. It is not called „ the Child of the Danube“ for nothing! When the fast-flowing Danube from the Alps reaches the region, it slows down, deposits sediment and branches out into thousands of arms. Over millions of years, these branching tributaries have created a true paradise: Islands, reefs and narrow channels, unspoilt floodplain forests and a particularly rich flora and fauna are an invitation to adventure. As part of my thesis, it was important to me to use architectural means to promotenature conservation in the region and at the same time support sustainable tourism. At the heart of this concept is an ecotourism visitor centre, which is intended to contribute to the expansion of the tourism network in the South Island region. The building site is located in the heart of Szigetköz, in Hédervár. As the historical and geographical centre of the region, the municipality serves as an ideal destination for tourists and an excellent starting point for exploring the river island. In order to minimise the architectural impact on nature, the information centre will be housed in a long-vacant factory building. Thanks to the close proximity of the Danube, the planned centre will also appeal to watertourism.
