Soil erosion and phosphorus (P) runoff pose major challenges to agricultural sustainability and water quality management. This study, conducted in the Hydrological Open-Air Laboratory (HOAL) in Petzenkirchen, Lower Austria, aims to identify agricultural fields within the catchment that are particularly susceptible to erosion and to predict future sediment and P loss under various scenarios. The HOAL, a small, agricultural headwater catchment (60 ha), provides an ideal setting for this detailed investigation due to its diverse land use practices and comprehensive historical data. Moreover, the HOAL Abstracts 19th Biennial Conference of the Euromediterranean Network of Experimental and Representative Basins (ERB 2024), Inca,Mallorca Island (Spain), 17-20 September 2024 97 represents a typical agricultural landscape for the Austrian Alpine foothills. This characteristic allows for the transfer of research findings to numerous other regions in Austria. Our primary objective is to identify fields highly susceptible to erosion and predict future sediment and P loss under erosive precipitation events. The study employs an extensive dataset spanning from 2010 to 2020, considering key indicators including soil management practices, fertilizer application rates, and the frequency and intensity of erosive rainfall events. By analyzing these indicators, we aim to identify trends and patterns that can help to predict erosion risk and P loss. Our methodology aims to integrate field observations with advanced geospatial and statistical techniques. GIS-based tools will be employed to map erosionprone areas and to correlate these areas with specific land management practices. Statistical analyses, including regression models, are utilized to identify the most significant predictors of sediment and P loss. This combination of techniques are expected to enable the compilation of detailed risk maps that can be used to inform future land management decisions. We anticipate that this research will provide valuable insights into the mechanisms driving soil erosion, sediment yield and P loss to receiving waters in agricultural landscapes. By identifying high-risk fields, we aim to offer insights that may help to reduce overall sediment erosion and phosphorus (P) loss, particularly from those fields that contribute above-average amounts. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the development of strategies that mitigate sediment and P loss, thereby protecting water quality and promoting sustainable agriculture. The findings will be of interest to policymakers, farmers, and environmental scientists seeking to balance agricultural productivity with environmental stewardship.
