Electronic structure of thin film Bismuth for spintronics : a tight-binding study

Abstract

In dieser Arbeit wird die spinaufgelöste elektronische Energiebandstruktur von dünnen Schichten aus Bismut berechnet. Der Bismut Hamiltonian der Elektronen, die Spin-Orbit-Kopplung und der Bychkov-Rashba-Effekt und den Zeeman-Effekt werden dabei berücksichtigt. Wir untersuchen die spinpolarisierten Oberflächenzustände, die sich an der Wismut-Vakuum-Grenzfläche bilden.Unsere Berechnungen zeigen, dass diese Oberflächenzustände eine signifikante Abklinglänge von 40 nm in das "bulk" aufweisen, was zu einer starken Abhängigkeit der Dispersion des Systems von der Schichtdicke führt.von der Schichtdicke aufgrund von Tunnel- und Hybridisierungseffekten zwischen benachbarten Grenzflächen.Unsere Studie hebt auch mehrere Phänomene hervor, die mit topologischen Materialien verbunden sind.Im symmetrischen Fall des Bychkov-Rashba-Effekts identifizieren wir das Auftreten einer Lücke in der Nähe des Fermi-Niveaus.. Außerdem zeigen wir, dass ein asymmetrischer Bychkov-Rashba-Effekt das Schließen und Verschieben dieser Lücke im Impulsraum durch Abstimmung des Verhältnisses der elektrischen Felder an der oberen und unteren Oberflächen ermöglicht, was auf das Potenzial für einen abstimmbaren Spinstrom in einem Spin-Feld-EffektTransistor (Spin-FET) hinweist.

This thesis presents a tight-binding study of the formation of the spin-resolved electronic energy band structure of both bulk and thin-film bismuth. We derive the matrix representation of the bulk bismuth Hamiltonian, incorporating spin-orbit coupling, the Bychkov-Rashba effect, and the Zeeman effect. We investigate the spin-polarized surface states that emerge at the bismuth-vacuum interface.Our calculations reveal that these surface states exhibit a significant decay length of 40 nm into the bulk, leading to a strong dependence of the system’s dispersionon film thickness due to tunneling and hybridization effects between adjacent interfaces.Our study also highlights several phenomena associated with topological materials.In the symmetric case of the Bychkov-Rashba effect, we identify the emergence of a gapped Dirac fermion in the electron pockets near the Fermi level, perpendicular to the high-symmetry line Gamma−M . Furthermore, we demonstrate that anasymmetric Bychkov-Rashba effect allows for the closing and shifting of this gapin momentum space by tuning the ratio of the electric fields at the top and bottomsurfaces, suggesting the potential for a tunable spin current in a spin-field-effecttransistor (Spin-FET) device.We identify the magnitude and ratio of the electric fields at the top and bottom surfaces, respectively, where the Dirac fermion aligns with the Fermi level at the time-reversal-invariant momentum (TRIM) point Γ. Finally, we propose how these theoretical predictions could be tested through in operando electrostatic spin manipulation using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES).
