Kupferbasierte Katalysatoren sind vielversprechende Kandidaten für CO2-Hydrierungsreaktionen aufgrund ihrer hohen Aktivität und der relativen Häufigkeit von Kupfer. Darüber hinaus zeigen kupferhaltige Mischoxidkatalysatoren Potential für den Einsatz als Elektrokatalysatoren in Festoxidbrennstoffzellen für die CO2- und/oder H2O-Elektrolyse. Eine wesentliche Herausforderung bei der Weiterentwicklung von Kupferkatalysatoren ist die Verringerung von thermischer Degradation durch Sintern der Katalysatoroberfläche und Verbesserung der Redox-Cycle-Stabilität.Perowskit-basierte Kupferkatalysatoren sind eine vielversprechende Materialklasse, in der durch Exsolution metallische Kupfernanopartikel gebildet werden. Nanopartikel, die mit dieser Methode hergestellt werden, zeigen teilweise höhere Sinterstabilität und sind daher ein vielversprechender Ansatz, die Stabilität von Kupferkatalysatoren zu erhöhen. Die zentralen physikalischen Parameter für die Steuerung von Exsolution und Oxidationszustand der Nanopartikel sind das elektrochemische Potential von Sauerstoff im oxidischen Trägermaterial sowie der umgebenden Atmosphäre. Durch elektrochemische Polarisation einer Modellfestoxidzelle kann dieses in Festkörper unabhängig von der Atmosphäre eingestellt werden. Auf diese Weise können Oxidationszustände an der Katalysatoroberfläche stabilisiert werden, die im chemischen Gleichgewicht mit der Gasphase instabil wären. Dieser Effekt kann theoretisch verwendet werden, um die katalytischen Eigenschaften eines Materials zu verbessern.In dieser Arbeit wurde die elektrochemische Kontrolle über die Oxidationszustände von Kupfer in Nd0.6Ca0.4Fe0.9Cu0.1O3–δ untersucht. Dazu wurde eine Kombination aus elektrochemischen Techniken, vor allem elektrochemische Impedanzspektroskopie, Coulometrische Titration und Messungen der Strom-Spannungs-Kennlinie sowie Röntgenphotoelektronenspektroskopie (XPS) verwendet. Die elektrochemische Modellzelle bestand aus einer polykristallinen Dünnfilmelektrode aus dem untersuchten Perowskit, die mittels gepulster Laserabscheidung (PLD) auf einem Einkristall aus yttrium-stabilisiertem Zirconiumoxid (YSZ) abgeschieden wurde. Ein über Fotolithographie hergestellter Pt-Stromsammler sowie eine schnelle, poröse Gegenelektrode aus Gadolinium dotiertem Ceroxid (GDC) vervollständigen das Modelsystem.

Copper-based catalysts are a promising choice for replacing noble metals in energy conversion reactions such as CO2 hydrogenation due to the relative abundance of copper and its high activity. Furthermore, they are promising electrocatalysts in solid oxide cells for CO2 and H2O electrolysis. Major challenges for improving copper catalysts include reducing thermal degradation by nanoparticle sintering and improving redox cycling stability.Perovskite-based copper exsolution catalysts are a prospective class of materials, because of the possibility of achieving higher sintering stability due to the formation of socketed nanoparticles. Key parameters for triggering exsolution and controlling particle oxidation states are the oxygen chemical potential in the host oxide and the atmosphere. By utilizing electrochemical polarization of an electrochemical model cell, the oxygen chemical potential of the mixed conducting perovskite electrode can be adjusted without changing the atmosphere. This theoretically enables the stabilization of surface oxidation states that would otherwise be unstable in a given atmosphere, thereby enabling improved catalysts. Combining electrochemical techniques, such as coulometric titration and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the electrochemical exsolution and switching of the oxidation state of copper nanoparticles were investigated on Nd0.6Ca0.4Fe0.9Cu0.1O3-δ. The model cell consisted of a polycrystalline thin-film electrode produced using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on top of an yttrium-stabilized zirconium oxide (YSZ) solid electrolyte with a Pt-current collector grid produced via photolithography and a fast porous gadolinium-doped cerium oxide (GDC) counter electrode.
