Investigating the earliest Bronze age contacts between Sicily and the Levant

Abstract

A pottery fragment found in a 14th-century BCE context on the tell of Beirut belongs to a vessel of the Thapsos type imported from Sicily and represents the earliest known Bronze Age Sicilian product that reached the Levantine coast. Employing petrography and neutron activation analysis, we analyzed typological parallels for that vessel from southeastern Sicily in order to determine its exact provenance region. The wider area of Syracuse is known for its Mycenaean and Cypriot imports, while products exported from 14th-century Sicily to Greece and Cyprus have not been found thus far. The well-known Thapsos/Pertosa sword from the Uluburun wreck is the only other published object that might have been produced on Sicily and ended up in the East Mediterranean during that century. Our archaeometric results provide us with the opportunity to reassess direct and/or indirect connections between the communities living on Sicily and the entire East Mediterranean.

Un tesson de céramique, trouvé dans un contexte du XIVe siècle av. J.-C. sur le tell de Beyrouth, appartient à un récipient du type de Thapsos importé de Sicile et représente la plus ancienne production sicilienne connue de l’âge du Bronze ayant atteint la côte levantine. Au moyen de l’examen pétrographique et de l’analyse par activation neutronique, nous avons analysé les parallèles typologiques de ce récipient du sud-est de la Sicile, dans le but de déterminer sa région de provenance exacte. La région de Syracuse est connue pour ses importations mycéniennes et chypriotes, alors qu’à ce jour, il n’a pas été trouvé de produits exportés de la Sicile du XIVe siècle vers la Grèce et Chypre. La célèbre épée de type Thapsos/Pertosa provenant de l’épave d’Uluburun est le seul autre objet publié qui pourrait avoir été fabriqué en Sicile et avoir atteint la Méditerranée orientale au cours du même siècle. Nos résultats archéométriques nous permettent de réexaminer les connexions directes et/ou indirectes entre les communautés vivant en Sicile et l’ensemble de la Méditerranée orientale.
