Nanoparticles vs Nanoclusters : Tuning Au-Cu catalysts for the water-gas-shift reaction

Abstract

Die Kontrolle von Größe und Struktur im Nanobereich ist ein Grundpfeiler der modernen Katalyse, da die katalytische Leistungsfähigkeit von Materialien durch ihre oberflächenatomare Anordnung und elektronische Struktur bestimmt wird. Insbesondere der Übergang von Nanopartikeln zu atomar präzisen Nanoclustern führt zu Quantengrößeneffekten, die das katalytische Verhalten grundlegend verändern. Das Verständnis und die gezielte Nutzung dieser Effekte sind entscheidend für das rationale Design hochaktiver und selektiver Katalysatoren.Zur Untersuchung dieser Struktur-Eigenschafts-Beziehungen konzentriert sich diese Arbeit auf die Wassergas-Shift-Reaktion (WGSR), einen zentralen Schritt in der Wasserstoffproduktion und -reinigung. Angesichts der globalen Bestrebungen hin zu nachhaltigen Energiesystemen bietet die Optimierung der WGSR einen vielversprechenden Ansatz für eine effiziente H2-Erzeugung. Die Entwicklung von Katalysatoren, die gleichzeitig hohe Aktivität, Stabilität und Kosteneffizienz vereinen, stellt jedoch weiterhin eine große Herausforderung dar.In dieser Arbeit wurden ein- und bimetallische Gold- und Kupfer-Nanopartikel sowie atomar präzise Nanocluster synthetisiert, auf Ceroxid (CeO2) abgeschieden und systematisch in der WGSR verglichen. Zwei unterschiedliche Synthesestrategien wurden eingesetzt, um Größe und Oberflächenchemie zu steuern: Polyvinylpyrrolidon (PVP)-Kappung für monometallische Nanopartikel sowie ein Mischsystem aus Oleylamin und Ölsäure für bimetallische Systeme. Atomar präzise Au25(PET)18- und Cu-dotierte Au25-xCux(PET)18-Cluster, stabilisiert durch 2-Phenylethantiol (PET)-Liganden, ermöglichten die Untersuchung katalytischer Phänomene im Subnanometerbereich.Eine umfassende Charakterisierung kombinierte UV-Vis-Spektroskopie, Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie und Matrix-unterstützte Laser-Desorptions/Ionisations-Massenspektrometrie zur strukturellen und chemischen Analyse. Röntgenabsorptionsspektroskopie an den Au-L3- und Cu-K-Kanten lieferte Einblicke in die elektronische Struktur und Metall-Träger-Wechselwirkungen und zeigte eine schwache Au–CeO2-Kopplung, jedoch eine ausgeprägte Cu–Träger-Interaktion, die durch reduktive Vorbehandlung beeinflusst wurde.Katalytische Tests zeigten, dass bimetallische Au–Cu-Katalysatoren aufgrund synergistischer elektronischer und geometrischer Effekte eine höhere Aktivität aufwiesen als monometallische Systeme. Besonders atomar präzise Nanocluster zeigten eine erhöhte Aktivität bei niedrigen Temperaturen und reduzierte Aktivierungsenergien, was die Bedeutung atomarer Präzision und von Quantengrößeneffekten im Katalysatordesign unterstreicht. Unter den Nanopartikeln erzielten Cu-reiche Au–Cu-Legierungen die höchste CO-Umwandlung und H2-Ausbeute bei erhöhten Temperaturen, im Einklang mit theoretischen Modellierungen im Rahmen des Gesamtforschungsprojekts.Abschließend wurde Ionenstrahl-Sputtern als Methode zur Modifikation von Nanopartikeloberflächen untersucht. Obwohl unter den getesteten Bedingungen keine signifikante Leistungssteigerung beobachtet wurde, zeigen diese vorläufigen Ergebnisse das Potenzial dieser Methode als präzises Werkzeug zur gezielten Anpassung von Oberflächenstruktur und Reaktivität nanoskaliger Katalysatoren auf.

Controlling size and structure at the nanoscale is a cornerstone of modern catalysis, as the catalytic performance of materials is governed by their surface atomic arrangement and electronic properties. In particular, the transition from nanoparticles to atomically precise nanoclusters introduce quantum-size effects that fundamentally alter catalytic behaviour. Understanding and exploiting these effects is crucial for the rational design of highly active and selective catalysts.To investigate these structure–property relationships, this thesis focuses on the Water–Gas Shift Reaction (WGSR), a key step in hydrogen production and purification. As global efforts intensify toward sustainable energy systems, optimizing the WGSR offers a promising route for efficient H2 generation. However, developing catalysts that simultaneously exhibit high activity, stability, and cost efficiency remains a major challenge.In this work, mono- and bimetallic gold and copper nanoparticles, as well as atomically precise nanoclusters, were synthesized, supported on ceria (CeO2), and systematically compared in the WGSR. Two distinct synthetic strategies were employed to control size and surface chemistry: polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) capping for monometallic nanoparticles and a mixed oleyl amine/oleic acid approach for bimetallic systems. Atomically precise Au25(PET)18 and Cu-doped Au25-xCux(PET)18 clusters, stabilized by 2-phenylethanethiol (PET) ligands, enabled the study of catalytic phenomena at the sub-nanometer scale.Comprehensive characterization combined UV–Vis spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry for structural and compositional analysis. X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy at the Au L3- and Cu K-edges provided insights into electronic structure and metal–support interactions, revealing weak Au–CeO2 coupling but a pronounced Cu–support interaction modulated by reductive pretreatment.Catalytic testing showed that bimetallic Au–Cu catalysts outperformed monometallic systems due to synergistic electronic and geometric effects. Notably, atomically precise nanoclusters demonstrated enhanced low-temperature activity and reduced activation barriers, underscoring the significance of atomic precision and quantum-size effects in catalytic design. Among nanoparticles, Cu-rich Au–Cu alloys achieved the highest CO conversion and H2 yield at elevated temperatures, consistent with computational modelling within the broader research framework.Finally, ion beam sputtering was explored as a means to modify nanoparticle surfaces. Although no significant enhancement was observed under the tested conditions, these preliminary results highlight its potential as a precise tool for tuning surface structure and reactivity in nanoscale catalysts.
