Design Principles for Urban Resilience : Selected academic proposals of two design studios 2022-2023

Abstract

After February 24 in 2022 the city of Lviv became the most important for refugees affected by the war. This resulted in the evolution of urgent demands such as more living space in the city. The academic cooperation aimed to support measures related to this evolving urgent spatial demand. In previous years the ‘Urban Density Lab’ academic exchange format worked with students to contribute to the planning debate in Lviv by using ‘urban design thinking’. This is why in September 2022, Chief Architect of Lviv Anton Kolomieitsev proposed to work on academic proposals that could help in the ongoing pre-development phases of a social-resilient neighbourhood named Zboishcha. The future residential area is dedicated to people with war experience and is strategically well-located next to the two large clinics "Clinica Communal Emergency" and "Communal Children’s Clinic", which play an important role in the post-medical care of people affected by the war. This text analyses key methodological components of the academic design work on the Zboischcha project undertaken by our two architecture schools in cooperation with Lviv City Council.
