Ultra-short pulsed (USP) laser ablation of metals is a key technology in precision manufacturing, enabling high-resolution material removal with minimal thermal damage. Despite its advantages, a fundamental understanding of the underlying ablation mechanisms remains challenging due to the extreme conditions induced by femtosecond laser pulses. Multiphysical simulations play a crucial role in unraveling these complex interactions, providing insights beyond experimental reach. Given the non-equilibrium conditions, rapid phase transitions, and material-dependent responses, predictive simulation models are essential for process optimization. This work presents a comprehensive simulation study based on the Mass-of-Fluid model established in [1], employing a three-dimensional finite volume approach implemented in OpenFOAM. The model solves the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for all involved phases, incorporating temperature- and pressure-dependent phase change models. Laser absorption is treated via the Drude model, while electron-lattice interactions are captured using a two-temperature model (TTM). Previous studies [2] have demonstrated the model’s performance for extreme fluences in copper ablation. Building on this foundation, a quasi-van der Waals equation of state is introduced for the vapor phase, while an advanced material model refines near-critical properties for liquid metals using the Tait equation. These developments are crucial for accurately capturing the transient material response during ablation. This study systematically compares the ablation behavior of copper, aluminum, and iron, highlighting the influence of material-specific properties on phase transition dynamics and ablation mechanisms. Quantitative validation is performed against experimental ablation depths, while qualitative analyses reveal the origins of crater morphologies. Additionally, simulations provide unique insights into vapor expansion and transient density accumulations, as illustrated in Fig. 1. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of material-driven ablation dynamics, paving the way for optimized processing strategies.
