As hydrogen gains importance in the global energy economy, optimizing its production becomes crucial. The water gas shift reaction (WGS), which converts steam and CO to H2 and CO2, is an essential step in the process of steam-methane reforming, one of the most common hydrogen production methods. WGS requires a catalyst, which can take different forms. Metallic nanoparticle catalysts are of a particular interest, because of their high surface to volume ratio, which creates high activity using small amounts of the catalyst. At the nanoscale, small changes in size or surface construction can lead to drastic changes in catalytic properties. Ion beam irradiation is a surface-sensitive way of modifying samples through sputter erosion. The shaping of spherical 10 nm Au, Cu, and AuCu particles with ion beams was simulated using the binary collision approximation code SDTrimSP-3D. Fluences between 0.5 and 1.0 ions/Å^2 result in the top of the sphere taking on a conical shape, while after irradiation with 2.0 ions/Å^2, the nanoparticle is almost completely eroded. SDTrimSP-3D also simulates the intermixing of elements, showing that irradiation of AuCu alloy particles leads to an enrichment of Au at the surface. The erosion of 10 nm AuCu particles was reproduced experimentally by irradiating nanoparticles drop cast onto glassy carbon wafers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements show that at 7.6 nm the average height of an originally 10 nm AuCu particle irradiated with 0.5 ions/Å^2 matches up with the simulated prediction.
