Rabijasz, C. (2026). Mono- and Bidentate-Based Mn(I) Complexes: Synthesis and Application [Dissertation, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://doi.org/10.34726/hss.2026.108842

The mixed donor set NR2(CH2)2PR2’ (R2 = Me2, Et2, Pyrr, R2’ = Ph2, iPr2, Cy2) was reacted with [Mn(CO)5Br] to afford new bromide complexes fac-[Mn(PN)(CO)3Br]. Upon reaction of the bromide complexes with AgOTf fac-[Mn(PN)(CO)3OTf] was formed. Alkylation was achieved by treatment of fac-[Mn(PN)(CO)3OTf] with MeLi (when R2’ = iPr2, Cy2) or MeMgCl (when R2’ = Ph2) to yield the alkyl complexes fac-[Mn(PN)(CO)3Me]. All compounds were fully characterized using NMR, IR and HR-MS techniques. In addition, structure determination of each congener was supported by SC-XRD measurements. Finally, all PN alkyl complexes were tested as catalysts for dimerization of phenylacetylene and hydroboration of 4-chlorostyrene and compared to previously reported PP systems. In fact, fac-[Mn(PCyNMe)(CO)3Me] and fac-[Mn(PPhNMe)(CO)3Me] represent the most promising candidates for the aforementioned transformations, respectively.Subsequently, simple monodentate Mn(I) complexes in the context of homogeneous catalysis were explored. Reaction of tertiary phosphines with [Mn(CO)5Br] yielded trans-[Mn(PR3)2(CO)3Br] (R3 = Me3, Me2Ph, Et3, (OMe)3, Ph3, (OPh)3, Cy3). Literature characterization data was complemented by NMR and SC-XRD, the latter confirming the mer-arrangement of CO ligands with trans phosphines. Hydrogenation of a range of alkenes was achieved employing [Mn(PMe3)2(CO)3Br] (0.25 mol%) in the presence of KOtBu (0.63 mol%) and applying molecular hydrogen under neat and mild conditions (20 bar, 35 oC, 18 h). Further, this study evaluated the influence of various phosphines, highlighting ligands with low steric hindrance and high -donor strength (PMe3 and PMe2Ph) as the most effective. The last part of the thesis focused on the alkylation of monodentate Mn(I) bromide complexes and their application in catalysis. [Mn(PMe3)2(CO)3Br] was treated with Na sand in THF, followed by the addition of MeI, EtBr or n-PrBr to obtain the respective alkyl complex. All Mn(I) alkyl compounds were characterized using NMR and IR spectroscopies. Complexes [Mn(PMe3)2(CO)3Me] and [Mn(PMe3)2(CO)3Pr] were investigated in the hydrogenation of 4-chlorostyrene with the latter exhibiting the best catalytic activity for a series of alkenes. In addition, mechanistic insight is provided by means of DFT calculations. SC-XRD analysis revealed the formation of acyl complexes [Mn(PMe3)2(CO)3(COEt)] and [Mn(PMe3)2(CO)3(COn-Pr)], confirming the proposed activation pathway by migratory insertion. Finally, direct carbonylation attempts using CO(g) were conducted, yielding [Mn(PMe3)2(CO)3(COn-Pr)] at room temperature after 22 hours.
